Apparently he visits Angola prison as part of a gospel outreach program for death row inmates. I didn't know this until a few minutes ago.
John 15:
12 This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.
When someone commits their life to Christ, one of the first things they begin to realize is how they now care for other people more than they care for themselves. So glad to see Doc reaching out to them. “I was in prison and you visited me.”
The you there is plural. I know two of the leaders of those men. They are definitely doing the Lord’s work. And it’s not just Death Row, although I believe that’s where it started.

I'd like to see the final tally on the lines of coke with the 86 Mets. Keith Hernandez and Lee Mazilli loved to party.
The Cali cartel built statues of Doc,Dwight and Hernandez once they got sober.

I saw him play at the old SPAR stadium against the Shreveport Captains early after he was drafted by the Mets. It was crazy how far such a skinny guy could hit a baseball!

On the broadcast, Keith Hernandez speculated that one of Straw's kids attends.

My cousin is on Death Row in Angola, I wonder if he met him.

I hated the Mets as a Braves fan, but I always liked Strawberry and Gooden.

I asked him, “Still better than the Daaaarryl! chants?” as we exited. He laughed and said,”Waaay better! But your son got skills.” Lol

Injuries and suspensions kept him from generating gaudy counting numbers
.258
335 HR
800 RBI
221 SB
His Black Ink/Grey Ink scores aren't much better. And he had such a bad reputation after his career ended, he got less than 2% from voters in his first year of eligibility.
He's done enough rehabilitation work post-retirement to merit a look from the Veterans Committee (or whatever we're calling it these days). But it's nowhere near a sure thing.
