I think Daniels is awesome, grit wise. Unfortunately he has been mislabeled a dual threat qb. When really he’s an agile qb.

He has to chew up the field by quick release passes for 5-10 yds. Offense has to give him rb dump to fend off blitzes. Then only after he chews up the field and fends off the blitz, can he make them pay with a sneak.

Right now he waits in the pocket for two to three counts, no one looks open after that long of a wait. All passes are bombs if you wait too long. Quick passes. No Sneaks.

Daniels’s biggest problem is he doesn’t see the field. He doesn’t anticipate our WRs being open and throw into tight windows bc he doesn’t appear to know they are about to be open. The reason why he hardly ever throws to Boutte is bc Boutte gets high/low coverage nearly every play. That would require Daniels to fit his throw into a tight window and therefore he never even looks Boutte’s way.

And he refuses to throw to spots- receivers break points

Daniels threw into tight windows Saturday. Did any of you watch the first half? Yes he missed a couple but the guy had 180 yds passing in the first half. Still need more shots downfield but I was encouraged by the progress he made in the TN game. No he's still not the QB to take us to the promise land but he may be what we need this year. Play calling could be better but with this Oline it is a work in progress.

This week was the first week I saw him do this, but he continues to pass up open WRs and not pull the trigger on time.

Watching replay, there were several times that as JD did his drop, the outside rush would close to him. He had a clear pocket in front, and instead of climbing the pocket, he tucked and ran upfield. Hopefully, they can get him to climb the pocket, keeping eyes downfield and then running if he doesn't immediately see an open option.

Anyway, I think he's doing the best his capabilities allow. I respect him for that.

Can't put all the blame on JD with a below avg line and no running game.

Offense is missing a Clyde Edwards type RB.

Until we can rush the ball you will see two high and that will give Daniels fits. And it keeps him seeing zone which is hell to break off QB runs.

We must rush the ball to help Daniels and we can’t

I think this is correct. It’s not even his ability to read the field, it’s his unwillingness to throw to a “covered” guy that’s about to break open.

It doesn’t help that he did it twice last week and ended with 2 drops on what should have been touchdowns/massive gains.

Or doesn't throw early enough, I can't decide which.

He does throw into tight windows at times and when he does he seems pretty accurate.

This was definitely not true through the first 3 games. I did a dive into that back then. Boutte had the most target but the third or fourth most catches of any wide receiver. He currently has the second most receptions on the team, trailing only Nabors. That is in 5 games vs 6 for the rest of the receivers, so I doubt it is true now either.

Perhaps I will do a deep dive into that for all the games again.

Boutte has dropped a bunch of passes.

If a play is drawn up like the 3rd down play where LSU set up for the run and it was a fake to throw deep to a one-one situation on a deep pass and on that play JD had plenty of time from the O-line. He still refused to throw it.
Kelly was so frustrated with him after that play.

How in the hell will he develop the courage to throw to a tight spot in the middle of the field.

He's a redshirt Jr I think . Hes basically started since a freshman at AZ state Are you telling me he still needs time to be aggressive and have confidence.

Jezzzzz

He needs to quit trying turn up the field every time he gets flushed from the pocket.

It's obvious with this O-line he's not going to have a whole lot of time, but if he can scramble horizontal to the line of scrimmage, it'll give receivers time to get a little separation. Will also open up some running lanes for when he does turn it up field.

Just the .02 from a casual observer.

I'm not telling you that, I don't know why he has regressed.

I can speculate that the jump in competition now might be as much or more than he saw going from HS to ASU.

Or that he came back from his injury in his sophomore year shell-shocked.

Or that his interception problem in his Jr year at ASU made him way too gun-shy.

Or that someone drilled into him ball security to the point it has effectively paralyzed his ability to decide to throw a contested ball.

I just don't know what happened to him.

I noticed in this last game that his throws on the run to right seemed to be way off target. When he sets and throws, he seems fairly accurate.

We had success with Boutte in motion to move the chains against FSU. This was shades of Amari Cooper "over and over again, down your throat because you can't stop it" at Bama with motion and quick hitters. Why on earth have we gotten away from this? Even if they jump it, it gives Daniels a pre-read because the D has to respect #7 in motion.

Mislabeled? Number 2 coming out of high school.
HE's not the problem. OL is horrible. This week will probably be our 6th OL lineup this year. This is a unit that must play together consistantly to gel. Chemistry is vital to OL. Our run game blows, too.

Oline is Not the entire problem. You obviously don't understand football. Our Oline is actually above average until recently with the players going down. South Carolina, Miss st and others have worse Olines but their QBs are making great throws and hitting receivers in stride. They aren't scare of tight windows or throwing deep .

and........ Please stop with the " #2 ranking" crap coming out of high school. If he was so high sought after he wouldn't have ended up a shitty college like Arizona state.
