Only Burrow, Davey, Russell, and Mettenberger ever had a season with more yards than Daniels threw last year. And Daniels still led the team in rushing in the same year. Daniels will very possibly have the second best season ever this year.

Yep… I’m putting him behind burrow, Flynn, MM and Russell (only bc #1 overall draft)

Meh.

If Burrow is #1 (and he is), then there are only 4 spots left.

So, what are JD's credentials for Top 5? Throwing 2913 for 2022. A Tiger Stadium win against Bama. 5 TD passes against Grambling. He's also rushed for almost 1000 yards and 11 TDs.

The knocks (so far) - he's only 11-5 as a starter right now. Biggest win is a regular season game and has only earned a part of a championship.

I think we need more to put him past Hodson who just has a massive career record. Mauck is the second best 2-year starter after Burrow. And then you have both Davey and Russell to contend with. Even Flynn would edge out Daniels at this point in the "of all time" category. That would probably be true for Bert Jones.

Difference is - Daniels is still playing and can get to that Top 5 status by just winning. 2023 wins out and, which will almost certainly be on Daniels legs/arm, and he's probably there.

Your post is solid except…

Flynn only started one season. Yes we won’t natty but Flynn put up very modest numbers. In fact, Jayden has already surpassed his career passing yards by a lot in less than 1.5 seasons.

As for Jones, it’s impossible to compare those guys from back then to todays game. But if people want to compare them, it’s hard to ignore than Jayden’s 1+ season has already surpassed Jones’s entire career at LSU as well

So, you have Mett as a Top 5 LSU QB of all time?

Statistics wise, he was the second best LSU QB ever last year.

Fair enough, but "of all time" is "of all time". Not "since the forward pass". Not "since Mac". "Of all time" and I definitely tried to give all the JD credentials for that tag. Has he accomplished a lot? Sure. Mett threw for over 3000 yards in a season.

Did JD throw 5 TD passes in a game? Yes. Against Grambling. Max Johnson threw 5 TDs against Central Michigan. Max Johnson threw for 2815 and 27 TDs in 2021. Newsflash! - Max Johnson isn't a Top 5 "of all time" QB.

Respectfully, Flynn's career stat line:

11-2 as a starter. Big wins in 2 Bowl games. 437-254-14 for 3096 yards(against SEC defenses in the mid aughts), 31 TDs, plus his 128/341 rushing, 5 TDs with the BCS win is an objectively better stat line than JD's to this point.

Pump the brakes there chief. Let him finish the season before you declare him GOAT.

Objectively speaking Mauck was mediocre at best. He just happened to be the right fit on a great team.

Daniels is definitely a step up over both Matt’s. I’m not old enough to have sufficient context for Hodson or Jones (I have NFL legacy for Tittle). I don’t think Jaylen is as good a passer as Mett, but Zach was a statue in the pocket and had great running backs to help him out.

I would say Burrow, Russell, and YA Tittle are clearly superior. I think Daniels is probably roughly on par with Rohan.

You make some solid points. I’ve been high on JD but it does feel premature to start proclaiming him a top 5 LSU QB of all time.

I think he could get there, but I don’t think he’s there right now when you account for differences in the style of play, number of games, etc.

Now if we are talking top 5 in what most would call the “modern” era of LSU football - i.e. since Saban - that’s probably a much more reasonable take.
