CWS throwback question--Wichita State in the 90's

How did they compete? Most of Gene Stephenson's roster were local Kansas kids, maybe Missouri. Whereas Miami. FSU, and LSU had players from all over. Skip recruited from NY Penn Florida Cali. Much smaller percentage of local Louisiana guys. The Midwest had that much baseball talent?

Because they threw at guys in the on deck circle

Missouri Valley Conference. That's all that you need to know.

I don’t know but I do know if it wasn’t for LSU’s rise at that time, he would be considered an all time great. We beat them in two title games and again in 96. He might have had 4 titles but for Skip and LSU.

They got lucky with Darren Dreifort being a Wichita local.
ETA: He gets lost in the shuffle in greatest college player discussions. Dude was basically Paul Skenes from his Air Force days...dropping bombs and throwing gas. Dreifort made the leap straight from Wichita St. to MLB with Dodgers.

Because many schools today care to compete that did not back then.

That program fell off a cliff.

He was an outstanding coach who attracted solid talent. In the 80s, Maine was a powerhouse. Much different game today.

Many felt those were shockers.

Brett Laxton had a pretty good National Championship Game against Wichita State in '93

They could hit. They may have started guerilla ball.

They should have used camouflage uniforms.

Wasn’t Creighton in that CWS too? Baseball was different back then.

Creighton was the team Wichita beat to get to the title game.

Skip may have single handedly stopped that dynasty. They won the CWS Title in 1989. They were CWS runner ups in 1982, 1991, and 1993. Don’t forget Skip was the pitching coach for Miami in 1982. Hidden ball trick, anyone?

Fullerton too. Also, locally for regional purposes South Alabama was good.

We attended the 93 series......for the championship game we had horrible tickets.....all the way down the left field line surrounded by WSU fans. They had huge players.....remember the two studs they had. We watched batting practice and just about any ball they hit went out of the park. The fans were all over us thinking they were going to beat us up.....and I was afraid they were.....and then Mr Laxton took the mound.

They were good in basketball too.
I remember the epic game in a packed Superdome when we beat them to go to the final four.
I was a student at the time.
