I stumbled onto this article today, and.. holy shite! I know Joe Dean had the reputation as a bean counter and overall a miserable AD (I was too young to really understand why at the time), but was this normal for the head coach of a major program at that time (tiny salary and basically coddling a massively incompetent coach)?

LSU in 1991 hadn't won an NC in 33 years, but it was by no means an undesirable job: 2 SEC titles (one outright) and several Sugar and Orange Bowl appearances that would've been recent memory from the 1980s, plus a stadium that I think seated around 80,000. Seems like we could've made a bigger/better hire than $90,000/yr for a USM coach even if Hallman was seen as a rising star.

I guess that before widespread internet use and social media it was hard for a fanbase to really pressure for changes in high places successfully.
SI article on Hallman coaching (and winning) his last game at Arkansas after getting fired in 1994
quote:

When LSU hired him in 1990 to revive its football program, Hallman was considered one of the hottest coaches in the nation. He had been on national championship staffs at Clemson and Alabama, and in his first job as a head coach he had guided Southern Mississippi to records of 10-2, 5-6 and 8-3. "We've got the right man," said Tiger athletic director Joe Dean at the time.

However, Hallman's first three LSU teams went 5-6, 2-9 and 5-6, including a combined 7-16 against SEC foes, and going into the 1994 season his job was in jeopardy. Then came Sept. 17, when the Tigers played at Auburn, which had won its last 13 games. LSU blew a 14-point lead in the fourth quarter when Hallman kept calling pass plays while Auburn was making five interceptions and returning three of them for touchdowns. Auburn won 30-26, and LSU fell to 1-2.

quote:

That defeat seemed to take the life out of the Tigers. When LSU lost to Southern Miss on Nov. 12 to plunge to 2-7, Dean and chancellor Bud Davis decided to buy out the final year of Hallman's $90,000-a-year contract. Stubborn to the end, Hallman refused to resign. So Dean and Davis fired him but agreed to let him coach the final two games.

LSU should have sued Curley for the fraud of impersonating a football coach.

Joe Dean sounds like a miserable hack. I heard stories about him caring more about horse racing than doing his job. Hiring a "basketball guy" to be AD at a place like LSU is probably a recipe for disaster in any case

Joe Dean drove his car into the LSU lakes and was a drunk dumbass.

quote:

Joe Dean, Louisiana State University athletic director, has pleaded innocent to hit-and-run driving charges stemming from a May 14 accident. Trial was set for Aug. 30.

Dean allegedly left the scene after rear-ending a car driven by April Hammack, who followed Dean to a nearby traffic light and tried to talk with him. Dean said he was in a hurry and did not have time to talk, she told police.

Hammack followed Dean’s car to LSU and told campus police, who said Dean acknowledged being involved in an accident.

Hallman was from a wealthy family in Alabama. He did not need the $$$. Good friend of mine was a high school class mate of Curly.

Amazing how coaches' salaries skyrocketed.

Hallman in '91 at $90k.
Saban in' 99 at $1MM.

What’s more amazing is someone posting about Curley’s salary from 30 years ago.

Joe Dean did more to harm LSU athletics than any other singular individual in history

I don’t think that’s accurate. I remember him telling a story that he had to hitchhike to College Station when he reported because he was too poor to have a car.
Considering it was Curly, he may have been lying.

Yes I believe Saban saw the potential in LSU and wouldn't be hindered by Dean

Joe Dean really ran LSU athletics and LSU football into the ground. Hiring Saban was the turnaround LSU football needed.

Saban's annual salary was 1.2 million. He requested 1 million over 5 years, but Mark Emmert gave him the 1.2 deal over 5 years.

If it wasn't for Brett Favre LSU would have never hired Hallman.
