re: Could Wade be the Saban of basketball?

Really what LSU is, or at least, should be hoping for is that Wade becomes the next Billy Donovan in terms of SEC success. Frankly, there is no reason LSU couldn't IF Wade is as good a coach as we hope he is.
The Dale Brown era and LSU fan support of baseball program since the mid '80's shows that LSU fans will support a consistent winner. Basketball's problem over the last 25 years is the lack of consistency. The last 25 years have been peaks, valleys and stalled momentum.
Still, basketball is the second highest revenue producing sport (even though it has been far less successful on the field than basketball)
If Wade has great success it would be a horrible business move not to do what is necessary to keep him. You don't just torpedo your second most profitable product

Atl26 , you hit it on the head if we can get like Florida when Donovan was there . Wow! We actually can if Wade continues to recruit as he is now. Not comparing Wade to Billy but thier styles are very much alike. The fire and passion, these kids play off of that.

We have 3 times as many pro HOF'ers in bball than football. You'd think we'd spend a lot on a guy if he brought that much success and following.
Really,
We have 3 in the NFL: Jim Taylor, YA Tittle, Steve Van Buren.
I only know of 3 in the NBA: Bob Pettit, Shaq Pete Maravich
Who am I missing?

The relative record may be similar at this point in the season, but the energy and the level of recruiting is definitely much higher.

Wade talks about discipline like Saban, but I don't think any NCAA basketball coach can actually enforce it at the level a football coach can. At least not without killing recruiting and running tons of players off. I think he's struck a pretty good balance so far, but we won't know for sure until a few seasons in.

I don't know what it is you are smoking, but if I were you I'd package it up and sell it.

I like everything WW has done since taking our job. (Note: I am a longtime MBB season ticket holder dating back to 1977.) BUT, it is gonna take three complete seasons to KNOW just how good WW is going to be at LSU.
Also, I think if we have great success in MBB LSU will do all it can do to keep WW here and happy. And that includes paying WW top dollar. Our athletic budget is greater than Kansas or Duke or Kentucky and we could pay what they pay if we chose to.

What makes you think Wade is an a-hole?

quote:Why? We can certainly afford to. I promise you that UConn, etc. can't afford to pay their coaches more than LSU can, especially seeing as how we have a discount HC in football.
I can see him taking over one of the all-time great programs once their coach retires, e.g. Duke, UNC, Kansas, Kentucky, etc. LSU could never compete with that.

Yep. You can tell the age of lots of posters based on their perspective of this topic. LSU can absolutely be a basketball school where the arena is packed and people support it in a big way. Now if a Kentucky or duke comes in and says we will pay you 7 million a year or something then yes I doubt we'd match that for basketball but just to say we can never be a big time basketball school is typically pessimistic of the younger crowd with no historical perspective
