re: Could LSU keep it "close" against the Bengals?

quote:People overestimate the NFL players, just because they're "professionals".
It would be a massacre and LSU would agree to a running clock to start the 2nd half and probably throw in the towel in the 4tu quarter. We would have trouble with their practice squad.
Lattimore was the best defensive back on Ohio State's team... by the end of his rookie training camp he was the best defensive back on the Saints. Same with Tre White, Jamal Adams, etc. We've seen some rookie WRs and RBs come in and just flat embarrass NFL veterans.
LSU's offensive skill players would give Cincy's defense fits. Burrow's accuracy would, also.
The biggest difference between college and pro is the line of scrimmage and the running game; in OUR CASE that would be minimized, I think.
We AREN'T a power running team, we're a shotgun passing team, with 300lb linemen whose job isn't to pancake, but to get in the way. Burrow can sit back a long time in college, but he's made quick passes a lot too, and I think he gets 2 seconds most of the time. And as we've seen over the course of the season, if you focus on the pass too much, a healthy Clyde can find a hole and has moves, and plenty of power with such a low center of gravity.
Kicker- I don't know how York would fare with NFL uprights, but he has a good leg, he's pretty much got NFL distance, so there isn't that huge mismatch.
I think our offense could move the ball decently, and score maybe 20.
Defensively, I'd say our secondary (Fulton, Stingley, Delpit) is pretty much NFL quality. Before you laugh, consider Delpit will start next year, Fulton has a decent chance to, and Stingley is better than them.
Don't think our D Line would hold up very well, that's the weak link.
Our linebackers... people will scoff, but look at the NFC South, our fast linebackers are creating havoc in the league, even the guys we didn't expect to (again, look at Atlanta with Jones).
Starter on starter, this LSU team with this offensive system could hang around with a bad NFL team for awhile, and in a 1-game matchup they have a chance. Depth would be the killer, of course. No chance in hell for a season's worth of games. But coming in healthy for 1 game, depth isn't as big an issue.
Flame away

The worst NFL team would absolutely blow out the best College team.

Do you realize if you took the bengals D line and swapped it in for any of the CFP teams’ D line, that alone would result in a massacre + complete blowout in the Semis and Natty. Let alone an entire NFL roster

We could absolutely score on them. Multiple times.
But we would get scored on every single time. Mixon would average 10YPC and Eifert would go for 250.

Negative Clemson had 3 defensive linemen drafted in the top 17 players of the draft and a 4th in the 4th round last year You take that defensive line and put 11 in the box and no NFL team is going to run on them
Sorry man. You’re logic here is just so far off. In this case you’re talking about 4 rookies. Regardless of how talented they are (and it’s not like we’re eve
talking about 4 nick bosas here) the experienced NFL o line will kill them. Oh, and then what happens when the 2nd string comes in? That average would jump to 12+ YPC

Nah, you're right...
Some of the best college teams could give pro teams fits at times.
These dudes are wacky to think they couldn't...other issues are play style matchups, schemes, etc.
I'm here to say, though...if Baltimore played LSU, it would likely be 50-7 Ravens...they likely starch the college teams like those 3 teams starched the cupcakes on their schedules.
Even against the Bills, Buffalo probably wins 34-17...
The Saints looked like they were playing a college team last week, I think the Tigers put up at least as good of a fight as the Colts did...heck, Brees couldn't be any more accurate against equivalent coverage.
Ohio State and Clemson likely have better matchups physically, but their schemes aren't close to LSU's Saints-esque program...they'd have even more problems scoring...

There is a big difference between grown men and growing men. Bengals would route LSU in the trenches. I believe anybody other than Dalton at QB would cause them to be self inflicted at the passing game. I’ve watched them this year. They’re terrible. Boyd would feast out the slot for about 180-200 yards with just pedestrian QB play.

I know LSU hasn't played inspiring defense for a lot of the season.
But still: it's a very simple concept.
Get some big defensive linemen whose job it is to absorb/negate the blockers. Have a bunch of fast linebackers behind them whose job it is to clean up the run. Have a secondary behind them that can cover without having to resort to doubling every WR.
LSU has the horses to do that; our defensive linemen don't have anywhere near the skill a pro lineman does, but a few are plenty strong enough to gum shite up with just brute power... which means you have to stick them with blockers. And while our linebackers took bad angles early this season at times, they've seemed to fix that lately. And with good angles, nobody is getting outside on LSU, college or pro. Speed translates quite well.
Our secondary- this gets underrated at times. I think we have people who can cover decently, even against NFL players. They might get open with time, but I just don't think people would be running free instantly. And when you consider that plays are about timing, you can mess up a play just with good coverage, not needing a big rush. You throw off the timing and things can go bad.
Would we get any pressure on the passer? No, I doubt it. Maybe a random blitz from a safety or something like that.
So, LSU would probably play the run decently, and the passing would come down to how accurate and in rhythm the Bengals QB would be; vs how much Burrow and his receivers can do in a quick passing attack.
To me, that doesn't scream "massacre"; it sounds like probably 34-17, with a chance to be closer. Much closer, if Burrow can slide in the pocket and Chase overwhelms their corners... and I think that COULD happen.
Remember that old adage- the more you rush the passer, the tireder your defense gets over the course of the game. The O-Line just has to stay in the way and play passive, the D-Line has to exert.
I'm not being a homer on this- LSU has the perfect formula for the question of a college team playing a bad NFL team close.
You have to have a great passing scheme, with a highly accurate QB, NFL caliber WRs, and NFL SIZED linemen playing a simple, passive pass-blocking scheme... we have that.
You CAN'T run the ball, not even Alabama in it's prime could do that; but the right offense with the necessary size and skill can pass.

Yes a college team has less pro-ready people and a pro team obviously has everyone pro ready but some college teams have players that are pro ready and way better than some of the pro players already playing. These are players that are going to be all pro Stars. Not just pro level. there are some juniors in college that are better than pros. That's why they get drafted in the first round. Not everyone is a pros is first-round talent. If you had a line in college that had four players draft Worthy of the first three rounds then that's a better o-line than most pro teams. Follow that up with a quarterback that is a top 5 pick or maybe three first-round receivers like Alabama. And even though there are more pro ready athletes on the pro team, some of the college guys are a year away from being drafted in the top 10. How many people on the Bengals can say their top 10 Worthy. ?? The same college players that are on college teams that are drafted in the top 10 are already better than some of the pros. They just haven't been drafted yet. So the pro team gets the edge with overall pros but an All-Star college team has more top-level talent that stands out.. So there's a chance..

The line of scrimmage would get so ugly

I hated these threads when Bama fans were doing it. I hate it a lot more when LSU fans start it.

I’ve watched the bengals and they really suck. It might be close

This is all I am saying. Like I said in my original post, I never was asking if LSU could BEAT the Bengals anyway. Just if they could keep it close. There are plenty of fresh out of college guys who go the NFL and dominate. Hell Lamar Jackson is in his second year (and first as a full-time starter) and he is about to win MVP. Leonard Fournette had his BEST season so far as a ROOKIE. Ezekiel Elliot led the NFL in rushing at a time when he should have been a senior in college. Not saying NFL guys aren't as a whole better but I think the very best college teams could at least manage to not get blown out by the absolute worst NFL team.

Joe B gets sacked every play. Defense gives up at least 100.

Um no. They would kill us on the lines and our WRs would have major problems w the dbs.

Only if the team dressed in New York Giants uniforms... NFL teams regularly do not show up on Sundays. If the bengals knew they were playing a college team they would do whatever it took for the win.

I have no doubt if Bama did what LSU did this year in terms of stats and schedule, ESPN would be pushing a "greatest team ever" narrative.
But since it is LSU....nah.
Regarding these dumb questions they ask, the simple answer is no.
Reality is, Joe Mixon would rush for 300 yards against our defense. If AJ Green were healthy...Yikes.
