Could Hess possibly end up being like Matty Ott?

Came in hot as a closer. Paul tries him as a starter and it doesn't go well. Tries to close again and just doesn't have it.

I hope not. I would love to see him come around as a starter (and I think he will) but I really hope if he doesn't, he can go back to his closing dominance.

Hess started more games last season than Ott did in his entire career.

In fact, when Hess starts next week, he will have started more games this season than Ott did in his entire career.

ETA: Which is to say that Ott was never truly "tried" as a starter.

Manieri doesn’t have a choice. When you recruit talented guys sometimes you have make promises. Manieri is keeping his promise. He would rather keep Hess as a closer.

We are two games into the first series of the season. Hess has pitched one game as a weekend starter this year. Calm the frick down. It is WAAAAY too damn early to start melting. Halfway through the season last year our fanbase was ready to jump off a bridge yet we were one game away from winning it all. Lets see how things play out for at least 2 weeks before we start the fire CPM chants

Coincidence.

Hitters eventually just figured that if they could lay off Matty’s slider out of the zone, all he had left was an 84 mph BP fastball. Once that happened, he was done for.

Hess has closer stuff and has started and moved to the bullpen before. No issue.I think he will be fine when he does.

Hey guys. Sorry for throwing out a talking point. I've had season tickets since 1993. I know all the facts y'all have all mentioned. It was simply a fricking conversation point.

Some of you are miserable fricks.

If you say Ott was never the same after his start, then you weren't paying attention during the first 2 + months of the season. His start was on May 1st and he had struggled all season. From the first game of the year, he never had the sharpness he had as a freshman. He was living on the edge his first several appearances, narrowly avoiding blowing several saves and then got progressively worse.

From all appearances, his arm was fine, he just lost the edge he had as a freshman and never could get it back.

Clearly you don't if you're trying to make this comparison.
