Cool Story about Kim Mulkey.

So I was in high school in the mid 80's. I played basketball at Caldwell Parish High School.

In 1988 we went to La Tech in Ruston and got to practice against the girls. This is when Leon Barmore was the head coach and the girls were national title contenders every year. KM was an assistant coach at the time, but we got to scrimmage against her and Theresa Witherspoon and a few other La Tech starters.

I'm not too big to say that it was a humbling experience. I remember thinking that I never wanted to be picked again. They set pick after pick after pick. Eventually, although we were more athletic, you get tired of being picked. They would pick until they got an open shot. We didn't employ a shot clock, in fact I'm not sure that women's basketball used a shot clock back then, so it was frustrating as frick.

This was in the stone age, before the internet, and I was a kid from a podunk town in north Louisiana, so I didn't really know who they were, or how good they were. We were insulted to be playing girls at first. Then they beat us.

It wasn't until after I left high school that it became apparent how good that La Tech team was, the heritage of that team, and just how good were Kim Mulkey and Theresa Witherspoon.

Not many posters will know what a Dynasty La tech Women's Basketball was back then, but they were a national powerhouse.

It's a cool thing to look back on now.

KM will have the women's BB program contending for a natty long before any of the other sports on the campus.

Fearlessness, heart, drive, determination,..............that's what it takes.

Today?....................give me the NIL money. Now you know why she is a legend, for all the right reasons, none of the selfish ones.

Very cool story. Obviously Kim has totally turned around LSU in no time, but Teresa Weatherspoon is just beloved by the Pelicans players. They go out of their way to talk her up. Very happy we have them both back in state!

If they ever make a movie based on a dramatized version of Mulkey's life, I hope this story makes it in.

Why didn't you just switch to a zone defense or switch all of the picks if yall were more athletic?

I seriously expected this to be a troll and say she gave birth to Little Sweet. Anyway....yes they were a dynasty. I had class with Spoon. When she returned to the classroom after their National Championship run in 88, the whole class was standing and applauding as she walked in that morning. Those girls got more respect on campus than Karl Malone did. LOL

2022-23, count on it, not a NC (UCONN, SC still well ahead of everyone) but we will be Final four or near it and in 23-24...watch out

That 1988 team went 32-2 and won the naitonal title. Weatherspoon, Erica Westbrooks, Venus Lacy, Angela Lawson and Sheila Ethridge were the starters. They were really good.

Why not?
Kim took a mediocre SEC team and nearly beat the eventual national champs.
Why can't she take her first real team and beat everyone?

OP, as a caldwell parish spartan and LA Tech alum, I know what you're talking about.

When did you graduate, who are your folks? I graduated in '10.

When I was at Tech about 1990 I spent a weekend in Columbia and there was a little bar with pool tables near the riverfront downtown. I don't know why I remember that place specifically, but it was a good weekend. I think I stayed at Fox McKeithen's house that weekend.

Mulkey and I were freshmen the same year at Tech. Women's basketball was an event, the event. Never missed a game. The Memorial Gym was electric.

I played a pickup game with some girls from LSU's basketball team and they played dirty, elbows, jawing, pushing. Stuff guys would never do in a pick up game. As the man you just had to take it. Only played one game with them.

We have a good bit more talent than last year but only two players back that played much, chemistry takes time and SC and UCONN have almost everyone back, Boston is a beast and Paige is healthy. Could we beat them, maybe but very tall order and we play SC on the road in SEC. Also, a lot more parity now in wbb....we will get there but not this year IMHO

I was born and raised in Ruston....went to LSU in '88. The entertainment growing up in Lincoln Parrish was Techster games. I remember watching a Kim led team at the Old Man's Gym that totally throttled an opponent...I believe they may have gone unbeaten that year. The tradition was that you didn't seat in your seat after the tip until they other team scored their first bucket. That particular game, I think we were standing for a solid 20" before the other team finally forced us into our seats. Kim was and IS tenacious!
