When bama just lost their coach to south Florida it came out how little bama funded women’s basketball. They spent the least in the sec and still lost 5 million a year. We lost about 8 million a year. We can drop to about what ole miss’s wbb budget and basically suck and save 1.5 million a year. With an athletic budget of over 220 million a year, should we drop from elite national championship contenders to hoping we can finish top half of the conference to save 1.5 million?

Wouldn't be shocked if some of it gets redirected to baseball. I doubt much more for men's basketball is needed because 8-10 in NIL should be good enough to compete or rebuild a culture.

That's EXACTLY how it should be at a major college sports program.

Isn't WBB running at -$7.5M yearly? I thought someone posted the numbers.
Yes. Here's the numbers directly from LSU's website for last fiscal year. LINK
Women's basketball ran almost $8M in the red for 2024-25
Men's basketball turned $2.5M in profit
Baseball was just under $1M in the red
Women's basketball has higher expenses than the men's team, despite the men's team generating 5x the amount of revenue. If the athletic department is having to spend $20M a year on paying player salaries directly nowadays, then the resources need to be spent on programs that aren't hemorrhaging money.

Ya'll sound dumb again, WBB gave LSU life. What Kim did in her limited time at LSU has been far greater than anything MBB have done in the school history
Greater yes, far greater????
MBB had done great tuns too. Great crowds. Great players.

this is where it seems obvious that the womens team could operate at less of a loss if you simply cut some of the ridiculous spending, like going to the caribbean every year.
LSU womens expenses are $10M/yr, same as the mens.
Kentucky, Oklahoma and Alabama womens basketball expenses are half of that.
and i do somewhat agree that in the grand scheme of things, i'd rather lose $2-3M more and be a perennial contender in WBB, even though i personally dont' care at all about womens basketball, than have those savings from our $220M+ revenue stream. Hell if it costs us $1M more in losses to actually win something in softball, i'd want to do that too. I only say that b/c i don't think that $2-3M is doing anythign to hinder football or mens basketball, or baseball for that matter, but if it is, then by all means cut costs so you can give it to those 3 sports first.

$2-3M annually should be able to get you an All-SEC caliber basketball player. That completely changes a team in a sport that only starts 5

First of all, it's fricking absurd that anyone would give their money away to a some kid to play basketball at LSU, and $2-3M for 1 player is ridiculous. If you're that good, then you better make us win and that contract should be incentive laden.
and as i said, is that $2-3M in WBB preventing us from spending that money in MBB? I have no idea if it is or not, but i'd have to guess it isn't. BUt if it was, then yes absolutely give it to MBB first.

I agree. No island tournament for either men or women. Why should LSU pay for them to have a vacation during the season? Plus, the streaming coverage is always bad and fans have to pay extra money to see it. Also, Mulkey should stop playing cream puffs and play some real teams before SEC and if that affects her won/loss record negatively then so be it. Playing ranked teams should also increase the revenue flow.

Unless you’re going to drop the program, you are going to pay that much regardless who the coach is. I was referring to NIL funds. NIL wise it’s not that expensive
Why? Why can’t they hire a women’s coach that makes 750k and cut their losses by 2 million or so?
Posted on 3/25/26 at 1:41 pm to CP3forMVP
the main reason Woodward got Mulkey to come home was the promise of a staff that makes her job easier as she can delegate a lot more
Mulkey ego will want another send off year and she's out for sure once Starkey has had enough

She ain’t leaving this on the table:
Coach Kim Mulkey, who led the LSU women's basketball team to the NCAA title in April, has agreed to terms with the school on a new 10-year contract worth $32 million, sources confirmed to ESPN. The deal must still be approved by the LSU board of supervisors, which meets on Friday.
When finalized, Mulkey's $32 million deal will be the richest total contract in women's college basketball history.
