There’s a glitch in college football and coaches are exploiting it. Until they change the rules, it’s damn near impossible to stop the RPO when linemen can go 3 yards downfield. The NFL is 1 yard, NFHS 2.

I think the one rule that needs to be changed is that OL need to be restricted to 1 yard down field on RPOs like the nfl.

5 yards is WAY to many and makes playing defense almost impossible.

Your post in the rules is a huge part of what is going on. The rules favor offense over defense to a vast degree. I will add to that the bizarre inconsistency of runners being able to stiff arm to the headgear of a tackler. Also, letting OL block downfield should be reined in.

There is common thread to the elite defenses:

Dominating the LOS and elite secondaries.

Yes
Elite pass rush
Aggressive man to man coverage jamming and being physical with WRs taking them out of their routes and timing.

But you need the athletes to do it.

Easier said than done.

The rules have changed more than offenses have. You can’t hit a qb high or low. You can’t jack a wide wr up coming across the middle. You can’t hand check a we past five yards. Cant tackle a guy buy the collar. Every penalty on defense is an automatic first down. It’s a step above flag football.

Defense used to be physical. Now they have to pull up and make sure they don’t hit a guy hard. While they are playing in quick sand, the offense can break tackles or run past guys.

That was already in effect years prior and offenses were not this high powered yet. For example, Bama didn't get this high powered until they got Tua and the four horsemen at WR running a hybrid offense.

Take 2020 away, it's covid confusion. There were the typical amount of high powered offenses, the only difference was now more of them were from the bigger schools. When LSU, Bama, Texas, and to a lesser extent, UF joined teams like Oklahoma, Clemson, and Ohio St, people really took notice of how high powered college offenses had gotten.

Offenses have definitely changed, but football is still won and lost in the trenches. Win that battle and 95% of the time you win the game.
don't know why this got downvoted - it's true.

Now that doesn't mean that winning in the trenches means a ground-and-pound offense. It simply means the OL can protect the QB and the DL can pressure the opposing QB.

And that's still critically important, even in today's game.

There is no amount of creativity that will counter the fact that referees permit offensive linemen to hold. That’s why defenses can’t stop offenses any more.

Yes it is time, it is beyond time for the ncaa to start Adjusting the rules in a manner that will help defences compete

This is old news. College offense has been changed for years now. The SEC was one of the last to transition.

There was this strange old guard among SEC fans that resisted it. Even when Auburn adopted the HUHN and beat Alabama, SEC fans derided it and the spread offense as Big12 soft.

Now the SEC teams can't stop anybody.

So it comes full circle.

The claim that only the SEC plays defense was really what we knew all along...the SEC was running basic offenses which is easy to defend.

And conversely the lowest scoring games in the nation this year and the highest D ratings, is the Pac12.

LSU defeated the BIG 12 best. And clearly had at least some defense. But the offenses are definitely better than the defense

Not sure why you think Iowa, Northwestern, Minnesota and Rutgers are so wide open that other conferences should avoid looking like them.

Northwestern has been running the spread option since the late 90s/early 00s. they were one of the pioneers of the modern offense

Bama turned a RB into a QB with better stats than our (then) lord and savior, Mett. they were rolling pre-Tua

if that was all there was to it, we should have seen SEC teams struggle in OOC and Bowls and that wasn't the case. look at LSU Oregon 2011, LSU held them 200 yards below their avg for the season.

no. Offense is more fun to watch. Maybe not a 56-49 came with NO defense, but 35-31 is more fun to watch than 14-10.

Now at some point, the rules can get slanted too much in the offense's favor. But right now I think we're fine.

There are still good defenses. Most in the SEC. just not a great year for it.
