Matt McMahon and Justice Hill Press Conference - Nov. 8

quote:

Wednesday night at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center, those words will hopefully become visible actions as the LSU Tigers open the 2022-23 men’s basketball season with a 7 p.m. game against the Kansas City Roos.

quote:

“I am excited with (Wednesday) night being the opener of our season,” Coach McMahon said at a Tuesday media session. “We’ve had a great preseason, going to be a work-in-progress as we get started … Spent a lot of time with our players trying to establish the culture that we want for our program, not just this season, but as we move forward as a program. We’re trying to stay locked in on getting continuous improvement from our players and team as we get started tomorrow night. For me, personally, there’s great anticipation and excitement to get to coach our first game here in the PMAC in front of all our great Tiger fans.”

While no official starting lineup has been named it is guessed that the lineup will include two members of the Murray State team that went 31-3 a year ago and 18-0 in the Ohio Valley Conference. Forward KJ Williams was the league’s MVP last year after averaging 18.0 points and 8.4 rebounds and Justice “Juice” Hill is expected to take the point guard spot to open after averaging 13.4 points and 5.1 assists a season ago for the Racers.

Mwani Wilkinson, who has started 44-of-61 career games, returned to the Tigers this season and will certainly play a major role and Tiger fans are hopeful that the will get to see Adam Miller in action for the first time after a devastating ACL injury prior to last season’s first exhibition game.

Kansas City comes in 0-1 on the season after falling 59-56 Monday night to Lincoln (Mo.). The Roos have a new first-year coach in Marvin Menzies, a veteran of the game, with 12-years as a head coach at New Mexico State and UNLV.

I watched Coach’s presser again last night from Halloween to see if he tips off any lineups or favorites, and he’s really tight lipped. He does seem to like Mwani so I would think it is safe to say he has one of the starting spots

G- justice hill
G- Adam Miller
G- Mwani Wilkinson
F- KJ Williams
F- Kendall Coleman

Fountain is also experienced & mature & could possibly get that nod over Coleman

The 2nd unit will be even more fun in my opinion, with Hayes/Hannibal, Justice Williams, tyrell ward & Jalen Reed. Eventually some of these guys will have to become starters because I don’t think this opening day lineup has enough offense.

Agreed, although our pretty weak OOC might shield that fact until December.

I think this is the starting lineup as well. Coleman is a pure "inside" player, and I think McMahon would like to let him shoulder some of the physical inside work to allow Williams a bit more freedom to move around on offense. Wilkinson has significant SEC starting experience, which is why he is probably getting the nod. It will be interesting to see if he has an expanded role offensively. Under Wade he was purely a 3 and D guy. Maybe as a now 3rd year player he has developed into someone who can have a bigger role offensively.

There could be a lot of length there with guys like Fountain, Ward and Reed. While he is not a finished product by any means, there may not be another guy on the team like Reed...a 6'10" with wing/ball handling ability. Even McMahon himself said he's never coached a guy like him...because those guys don't play in the OVC.

Fans need to take the same approach as they have done in football. This will very much be a work in progress and the team we see in mid-January may not resemble the one we see here in November.

Ward should definitely help with the scoring in the starting lineup, looks like McMahon is going to trust KJ to take on the rebounding duties out the gate.

Miller at +118 to score 10+ points on FanDuel seems like a steal. I put that with LSU -22.5. $10 will return $35.50. Let's ride!!!

Edit: For the hell of it, I went back and put $3 on Miller to score 15 at + 430. In AceWolf we trust
