He claimed that the money was expense money that he had not yet turned in to the athletic dept. And as I recall, it was for Chris Jackson's mother. One of the many reasons the NCAA hammered Dale so harshly after chasing him for yrs. He was smarter than Wade when it came to the "process" of cheating but his hate back at the NCAA is what motivated the NCAA to keep after him. He once was quoted on the front page of Sports Illustrated, at a time when it was a nationally recognized publication, as calling them "Those Gestapo Bastards".

Sort of. While on the road, he had cashed an expense check given to him by the university, as well as cashed a personal income tax refund check. He had paper work to back it up, and as Abernathy put it, who would be dumb enough to call the police if you had illegal cash stolen from your vehicle. It was investigated by the NCAA and LSU was cleared of any wrongdoing.

It had nothing to do with a player, and it was well before his time. This was in 1982. Link to the article below.

What kind of briefcase is needed to hold 2- $1,000 bills?

Coach Abernathys briefcase opened with numerous 1000 dollar bills in a biloxi hotel … You young people don’t know the story. LSU was recruiting Kenny Jimerson from Biloxi. Abernathy went there to see him with a brief case loaded with 10 k in cash. Abernathy never showed up to see Jimerson. He reported the brief case missing and actually filled out a police report. Of course we know that he probably took the money himself. There was never a final answer to what happened to it. Jimerson signed with McNeese. Yes that McNeese.
This is in fact grossly inaccurate other than the state it happened.
Here is a paragraph from the LA Times on LSU and bag men. Abernathy was a bag man for either Rudy or one of the other players he brought with him from Louisville Kentucky. All of a sudden LSU became relevant.
“The LSU recruiter who eventually won Williams, Ron Abernathy, once had $2,000 in cash stolen from a briefcase during a recruiting trip. Abernathy explained that he was driving around town paying bills with the cash when he was suddenly called away on the recruiting trip.”
Brown claims Williams got nothing, but we know the truth. He had a fine arse car for “nothing” and the dude didn’t want to attend LSU, but his advisor, a bookie, guided him to LSU. Brown bought “jewelry” from the guy because he liked it or some shite like that. I can’t recall all of it now.
Reliable Oil Field services paid most of the team during the summers to ride around a couple hrs a day and do nothing. I knew their owner very well.
Paying bills in Mississippi in cash while he lives in BR??

Did Abernathy withdraw the money from his wife's bank account?
Posted on 3/14/22 at 6:13 pm to lsutiger74
is he really? Cash is untraceable. All Dumb arse Wade had to do was go to CVS and buy a bunch of prepaid visa cards and no one would have ever known and he would still be the LSU coach. Because I don't think the wiretap was enough to get him fired but writing checks from his personal account was.

1000 dollar bills
But in all seriousness, Dale Brown was smart unlike Wade.
There's was always a middle man/bagman. You could never nail Brown directly.

I remember when he was at Harrison Central, he was a very good player, but I didn't think he was LSU good.
Dale Brown had some really good teams back then but I believe he was coming off a season where they lost to Tulane in the NIT.

I thought the Orgeron crybabies were bad, but the level of butthurt exhibited by the Wade sycophants is comical.
This is so true. At least coach O won something that mattered
