I have no idea why anyone cares how it reflects on the team. It was marijuana. It was not domestic violence, rape, robbery, theft, murder....
Additionally, they are Former players. It probably did happen while they were on the team and there probably are plenty of players on the team now that would fail a drug test. This is true at most schools.
Marijuana is very common among college age kids, including athletes.
The guy made a mistake and his whole world was turned upside down. Give him a break.
He alone would not have changed LSU's season.

Former players get arrested all the time. Did Dre Kirkpatrick get arrested like three weeks after the national title.

I heard Kevin Faulk once got a speeding ticket and J Addai was caught jaywalking. They should group him into this story.

this shoulld be a wake up call for LSU fans...these guys are getting popped because they are no longer protected by the team with Law enforcement. this crap has been going on for a while and dollars to donuts there are likely still several team mates on the squad that still hang out with these guys. I promise you that.

I think LSU athletics needs to come up with a preventive plan to minimize the chances of this happening again

I think LSU needs to have some professionals working with some of these kids.
You can't help someone that doesn't want it. Your absolutely ignorant if you don't think that LSU used every preventive measure available to keep Mathieu straight... and this was before he got kicked off of the team.
At some point, we've got to stop pointing the finger at everybody else and look at the individual with the problem.

There are ways to enhance individuals motivation to change behavior, but it takes specialized training. LSU athletics would do well to make sure the professionals working with athletes have a working knowledge of motivational interviewing/enhancement.
You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink. You can make the horse thirsty though.

you can argue that LSU football is what kept these guys out of jail.

Maybe the hold JJ had over clm wasn't the pictures of les in a sexual comprising position, but one of him hooting one up with the guys.

i agree that it seems that LSU is held to a different standard of conduct than MOST other colleges. BUT, the top teams always are, LSU IS NEWS, BABY! it does amaze me that getting caught smoking a little weed causes such drama. hell, i caught my kids several times. fortunately, they have grown up and stopped it. kids, work and family responsibilities have that effect on us.

Hey.. disappointed like all others about an athlete with talent wasting an opportunity. At least we know who the supplier has been at LSU the last few years.
My only hope for TM is just maybe he wasn't smoking pot, but was dumb enough to be around knuckle heads selling it. I'm assuming he is taking an urinalysis test monthly.. just doesn't make sense.

Why do people always assume that the cops are in the right? They were arrested for what is at best a minor crime. The fact that selling weed is a felony punishable by years in prison is the problem, not the "former" players.
I'm sure all the a-holes who will hate my response will all be getting drunk this weekend drinking their legal drugs.

I believe that LSU Football program has no commitment nor control over the players once they have left the program.
To those of you who say this reflects poorly on Les and his staff, I offer this contrary position. Since the RP episode of a few years ago how many controversies has the LSU FBall program seen? By way of comparison to UF and UT recently and Miami of years ago I'd say remarkably few. Especially when one considers the level of prosperity the program has enjoyed. I believe Les and crew have done a marvelous job keeping the players under control. I'm certain its a daunting task.
As has been evidenced over the past 24 hours at LSU and the past few years in other schools, most top flight athletes didn't pass up their Rhodes Scholarships and present their MENSA memberships to play football on National Signing Day.
I hate that these former players have gone this direction. It was their choice and they will live with the consequences. They were given the opportunity to play for a great University and receive a world class education,.. free of charge. I have no pity or sympathy for them.
Kudos to Les and this too shall pass.

It looks bad. Especially for a coach, Les Miles, that takes pride in running a clean program.
So it looks bad for Miles that he kicked Mathieu off the team before he was ever arrested, and since getting KICKED OFF THE TEAM, he has since been arrested. I don't get this at all. If anything, it makes Miles look great. He didn't go the old Bowden method of make him run some stadium steps and miss the first half against Directional State. He kicked his Heisman Trophy finalist off the team before he had a run in with the law.
I will await the list of all of the strong disciplinarian coaches who have acted similarly, with examples. Who else kicked off his star player BEFORE a run in with the law?

You answered your own question

And why were the cops even present??? Because Jordan Jefferson was acting like an entitled arsehole causing a ruckus at the security gate.

It was just marijuana? Really? Last time that I checked it was illegal to posses marijuana. Last time that I checked just having marijuana will land you in the county jail.
A crime is a crime no mater how petty that you think it may be. Try walking down the street carrying a bag of marijuana and see what happens. Try using your statement "what's the big deal your honor. It's just marijuana" and see how well that works out for you.

quote:It is a two sided coin. The degree to which players are in the spotlight during their playing careers is the degree to to which their failures will be publicized.
The thing that bothers me is that they're FORMER players.
A former third string OL counterfeiting $100 bills won't make the news, but a Heisman trophy winning counterfeiter will.

The arrest of FORMER football players caused this comment? I am so sad for the young men who have caught themselves up with their immature actions but it pales in comparison as to what the outside of Louisiana response is to it...
Yeah because I'm sure these cats had never TOUCHED pot until after they were no longer in the LSU Football Program.
The preceeding that you quoted is an entirely true statement. Just because they're not on the team currently doesn't mean they don't still cast a light on the program.
