Close-ups of Jefferson show the confusion (not his)

I saw the last quarter and a half of the Cox replay last night and they had some great close-ups of Jordan Jefferson as he was waiting for the play. I have been sick of hearing about how everyone wishes LSU would just call a play and run it, because many other teams check the sidelines before their plays as well. However, Tiger fans are right to a degree. You can clearly see Jefferson checking the play clock and turning back to the sideline with a hurry up motion. It takes longer for LSU's calls from the sidelines than the other teams. Tebow would have a call from the sideline with about 12-13 seconds left on the play clock. LSU signals in the final play with about 7-8 seconds left. The close-ups on Jefferson showed his frustrations with the long waits for the play call several times.

The last 1:30 of the 3rd quarter was one of the biggest cluster****s I have ever seen by a coaching staff. LSU had 3 straight rushes for about 20 yards, so we're getting some rhythm and then we get the penalties. The false starts are a direct result of the mass confusion with getting a play and trying to beat the playclock all in about 4 seconds.

They need to make that looking to the side shite illegal. I hate when teams do this crap and I also hate it when LSU does it, because as mentioned it's just a big clusterfrick.

It kills the rhythm of several LSU drives and as mentioned it creates confusion.

Just give them the plays and let them execute.

It was painfully obvious on the drive your talking about. Both JJ and CS are all but begging the coaches to give them the play. Then T-bob false starts, then JD false starts, then drive over.
That wasn't the only time, just one of the most obvious.
The sad part on the t-bob false start was they had a really good play called. It was going to be a quick pass to the left and we had 2 receivers and 1 defender out there.

Reminds me alot of the clusterf that happened with the D last year. Other teams were running the play and our players were still staring at the sideline waiting on the play.

I agree. I can't believe Miles thinks this shite is ever gonna work. I mean seriously it looks like the coaches have never coached and the players never played. I would like to see this shite done away with and a new system implementd even at the expense of getting temporarily worse. I hate to think of LSU running this crap for the rest of the year.

This could be an example of two coaches trying to call one play. I'm not big on the "Les Miles is over-ruling Gary Crowton" bandwaggon, but there has to be at least two people discussing what play to run. The whole point of the check, is to see what the defense shows when we pretend we're going to snap the ball. The OC in the box is looking at the defense, then he makes the call. However, we take a good 12-15 seconds after the team on the field has turned to the sideline to make a play call. Then Jefferson has to run to the line and tell each lineman the play. By that time we have to hurry to get the play off. No wonder he doesn't seem to read the defensive secondary. He's doesn't have time to look at them after he gets the play.

I don't think that it is Miles who thinks this is working..or even agrees with it..he has given the off to GC more this year than to anyone so far on off, and GC is making a CF out of it..bet for Auburn it is gone..won't see it, they'll go back to what they did for GT, 25-30 play book and run what is called..

That's a great point that I hadn't thought of. Maybe if we come out of a huddle with 15 seconds left on the playclock, JJ would be more confident having more time to read the defense.

I posted about this in the "What was the most frustrating offensive play" thread. That series defined what is wrong with this team. Our own system has a way of killing any momentum we have. The game was lost on that series. With the time Florida was taking off the clock on every drive, we couldn't afford to waste that opportunity. We didn't get the ball back after that until there were 7 minutes left in the game, and we had only run 8 plays in the 2nd half.

I've never been a huge fan of QBs looking over to the sideline to get a new play. Whatever happened to a QB having a good grasp of the offense and being able to call the correct audible at the line by himself? All this tells me is the OC or HC is not comfortable enough with the QB to make those decisions.

Many teams are doing this, even Florida. The difference is the time it takes for LSU to get the play back to the QB.

I really don't care if Florida does it or not. I still don't like the idea. Nine times out of ten, while the offensive play is being changed, the defense is changed as well(at least the coverage is disguised).

Wasnt this a problem with our defense last season? A big clusterfrick, and noone knows what the hell is going on and plays taking too long to get called.

frankly with as long as LSU takes to get the play, it negates one of the reasons you do it: to prevent the defense from subbing. So the only benefit to the meerkat offense is allowing the OC to read the defense's formation and call the play and the direction. But so many teams are doing the meerkat and defenses have already started adjusting by shifting really late

+1000 Offensive coaching prep for this game was unacceptable.

Great post. Not enough blame has been assigned to this. It is unsettling to all of the players, but especially a young QB, to have to process the call , all the while rushing to beat the clock.

The difference with Florida doing it is the call for Florida is to a number on Tebow's wrist band of plays. Watch it closely, he gets a simple call, checks the play himself, and calls it at the line. Our coaches try to signal in the entire thing from formation to play. JJ has never had to check his band because of the coaches signalling in the whole play call. If they are going to continue to do this( which I also hate by the way) at least shorten your signal, let JJ check the play and call it.

AGREE!!!

That was a turning point in the game IMO. It was over after that. What little Off. momentum they had was killed. After that it was 3 & outs & sacks a plenty.
