This. Most of y'all suckers bought into it last year and was shocked when you seen how bad the defense was

Give examples of what he said last year about the defense everyone bought into.

I don't expect the offense to repeat what it did last year.

The defense MIGHT be marginally better just due to scheme but the offense will turn the ball over more. Adding two more teams to the conference, it's very possible they finish 13th again but anything in the top half would be a minor miracle with the talent they have, or don't have.

I don't feel Kelly has ever sugar coated where he feels his team is at. I'm inclined to take him at his word.

yeah I'm hoping this isn't like 2020 when Coach O said the defense was better than last years. Even if the defense is MUCH improved from last year it could still be meh, though.

Why do people keep saying this as if its a real thing? You can ALWAYS get worse than before.

Now will we be? I highly doubt it with Baker calling the shots.

Well what would you think he was gonna say? Lsu had the worst defense in school history last year.

So he’s not lying! Nowhere to go but up!

I know people willl be like "what else is he gonna say???" but I'm inclined to take Kelly at his word.

He was trying to tell us this time last year that the team was not championship-ready. Most of y'all refused to listen and didn't adjust your expectations.

Kelly has been pretty truthful(even blunt) overall in his assessments so far.

Kelly isn't Coach O, not all people are the same, etc. etc.

Group think is real. if people hear it enough and it's an easier concept to grasp than reality, people run with it.

Just like playoff expansion being the first thing people think of to "fix" college football.

I already said this earlier in the thread, but last year in his press conference right before the Florida State game he said that he felt like the DB room was in a better spot than it was the year before because the communication was much better…

Now I don’t know how many people bought into it because the entire fall we were told through the media that the DB’s were constantly getting beat, but I know some people definitely believed it.

While I'm very hopeful about our defense being good the year,
I realize the bar is very low for being much improved. We can be much
better than last year and still be mediocre.

I'm not falling for that shite again.

He really shouldn't be saying that either.

He went into last season questioning the defense... There was smoke last year and then we saw the fire. Not getting those vibes this year.

Well, he could have said:
“We will be improved” or
“We will be better”
Or
“We are looking forward to a more competitive on-field experience”” (if he were Les Miles)

Point is; He could have said MANY other things other than “we will be MUCH better”
Meaning he sees something that makes him believe the defense will be MUCH better and said so. Which puts him on record and exposes him to criticism if we lay another egg. Thus Im happy he said it and hope it’s true.

You're being sarcastic, but the man basically said the secondary will be shite without saying it last offseason. I remember it being talked about and brought up multiple times later on.

I think statistically the 2020 Pelini defense was the worst. But only because the ‘23 defense played some cupcakes to polish that turd on the stat sheet. The 2020 team had to play an all SEC schedule.
i already looked this up, but the LSU defense was worse vs SEC teams in 2020 than it was vs SEC teams in 2023. The 2020 team also played worse offenses.

Think back to it. We gave up over 600 pass yards (SEC record) to Miss St QB who wasn't even the starter 2 weeks later. We gave up 400 yards and 4 TDs to a QB who finished with 2360 yards and 7 TDs in 10 games starting. We gave up 300 yards and 3 TDs to Bo Nix (Auburn scored 48). Bo Nix finished the season throwing just 2100 yards and 9 more TDs in the other 10 games. Feliepe Franks threw for 339 yards on 26 attempts vs LSU. Franks tried to be a TE in the NFL. We gave up 385 yards and 4 TDs vs Bama passing and 474 yards and 2 TDs passing vs UF. Rushing yards were also insane

As he welcomes back the CB creep to practice as he works through ‘legal matters’. Does he have no shame? Does not look good for LSU.

Pennywise stole from this team and did not put players on the field in a method by which they could succeed. Elite staff can make elevate average to effective.

And hey, 98th ranked defense would be improvement, correct?

Coach Kelly should talk about the defense as improving not MUCH improved that way expectations are tempered. The only way we will know if the defense is MUCH improved will be what is displayed on the field.
