It's a seismic shift in the CFB landscape.

And this dude took it on to come take on the best.

Friggin stoked.

Don't kid yourself - $100 million is a ton of money and would entice almost anyone to come here.

And, unlike a move like Jimbo to A&M, he's leaving Notre Dame at the height of his success there (more or less), rather than leaving it in a state of decline. Really, this is a remarkable hire and moment for LSU athletics.

LOL, some of the ND message boards have posts calling it a step backwards.
These guys are trapped in a time warp, it’s 1918, and Ronald Reagan is running the ball.

The money is huge, without a doubt, but he could have leveraged the current landscape for a new deal at ND.

He was at the tail end of a 6 year deal and probably in the $3M / yr range. Would ND have paid him $9.5M a year? Possibly not, but ~$8M was clearly doable.

From a non-football perspective, maybe.

After watching that PC, I’m hopeful that this will be part of making all of LSU better.

ND doesn't have to disclose their salaries being a private school. I highly doubt they were paying him that low in reality. And I hate ND, but they absolutely could have matched LSU, they have a bunch of wealthy boosters that would have chipped in.

I just think Kelly wanted a change after being there over a decade, and wanted the challenge of competing in the SEC. It's like his final frontier, ultimate challenge to cap off his HC career which is 30 years running now. Win a title or two at LSU in the SEC and he cements himself among the greats in CFB history.

Dude could have coasted on easy street until retirement in South Bend. But it's probably been eating at him for a long time watching the SEC win championship after championship and thinking, I want some of that. Give me those resources and talent and I'll kick your arse.

Then Scott called.

Eh. The after-tax, present value of that is probably like $20M. Not bad, but certainly easily squanderable by just his kids.

I’ve seen reports that his ND salary was 6 - 7M

why would you think this? why would he be paid like the 40th best coach in the country?

They were paying their basketball coach $2.4M. I seriously doubt they were paying Kelly just slightly more than their basketball coach. They'll never reveal his true salary b/c most of it comes from elsewhere that doesn't show up on the ND books.

Oh sweet baby Jesus, yes please!!!
If he stays ten years and walks away with only 1 I'll still consider him a success. Think about it; how many schools can say that every coach since 2000 has/will win a national championship?

It’s easy to troll, but the fact is that Brian Kelly understands the the SEC will soon be paying out $100M annually to each member school. Chew on that laterally.

I'm just making a guess based on what I can find publicly - which was about $1.8M per year.

The real story is the higher amount he was making before, the bigger the story is... so I tried to downplay as best I could without going over.

It truly is remarkable. I don't care how much they gave him, for a guy to willingly leave his dream job at Notre Dame to come to LSU, that's huge. We're not talking about OK State or Michigan State here. We're talking Notre Friggin Dame. The winningest coach in Notre Dame history decided he wanted to leave South Bend for Baton Rouge.

The media is so stunned by this news but it's been clear for years that LSU is one of the best jobs in the country. Just need a huge set of nuts to take on the challenge.

It’s been known that Kelly made 2.7 a year and is outside the top 50 coaches in coaching salaries.

Maybe it was top 30 but it was one or the other definitely

WTF? If you're paying that much in taxes in Louisiana, you probably need a new CPA.

This is the thing. Riley resisted getting anywhere near the SEC. Butt stung by LSU in the playoffs, he ran to the PAC 12.

Kelly took a similar licking from Alabama in a National Championship, embraces the experience and runs to the sound of the cannons first chance he gets, making, like you say, something of a lateral move.

It certainly suggests, between the two, who manned up and who ran to his safe place.
