Do exhibition college basketball games mean anything more than grapefruit league baseball, or preseason pro football?

Well no but if the years we lost to those shitty teams were years we won 9-12 games it might portend something.

We beat Baylor and Houston in recent years scrimmages and weren’t in those teams league once the season started

LSU was potentially going on probation and has not been a historically great basketball school. There weren’t any big time coaches beating down the door to come here. McMahon was always going to be a bridge coach. Just chill out. It’s not gonna be fixed overnight. You need to lower your expectations. Comparing McMahon to either Brian Kelly or Kim Mulkey is a fool’s errand. Kelly is one of the winningest active coaches in college football. Mulkey is a hall of famer who was able to completely overhaul the team just by attaching her name to the program. It’s just not a fair comparison.

Was it year's we sucked or just were a tournament team that wasn't a Final 4 quality team?

But no reasonable person should expect even a mediocre season. This is a complete rebuild.

You do realize that it doesn’t take 4 years to build a basketball team… right?

In year two, our women’s coach and baseball coach won a championship. Our football coach brought a 6 win football team to the SECCG. Our men’s basketball coach is expected to be less than mediocre in year 2

It actually seemed like a good hire at the time considering the circumstances. Most people on here liked the hire. But the product was atrocious last year and I think McMahon is way too mild-mannered to be a good fit here without putting a really good product on the court.

I would agree on both counts.

I would agree here, in fact IMHO we underachieved even amid the circumstances that everyone points out and everyone knows about.

We are picked to finish 13th this year, we need to overachieve IMHO to show some sort of progress, and finishing better than 13th is a very low bar for overachievement, then finish filling out what is a surprisingly good recruiting class and get a good player or two in the portal and if we don't make significant progress in year 3, time to think about a change.

McMahon has been quietly signing 4-5 star players.
Who lose to Tulsa.

Back in the day when freshman were ineligible, UCLA’s freshman team would play with (and sometimes beat) the varsity squad.

You’re either good or you’re not.

We’re not good. We can get better but we’re not good.

2nd yr coach replaced the whole roster. Guy from La tech

Yes. Tulsa significantly overhauled their roster from last season. Something many fans, including several in this thread, don't seem to get is that basketball rosters can be COMPLETELY turned around in just one offseason.

Three years ago Iowa St. went 2-22 (0-18). The very next season with a completely new roster they went 22-13 and reached the Sweet 16.

Kansas St. had three straight losing seasons. Then Jerome Tang came in last year, completely overhauled the roster (with more new players than LSU last season), and went 26-10 with their season ending 4 points short of reaching the Final Four.

Now, I'm not saying this year's Tulsa team will be great. But in today's college basketball world the 5-25 record last year can be largely meaningless because this year's team is a completely different team. Sure, it is a bit disappointing to see a loss to a team picked to finish in the bottom 1/3 of a second tier conference. But remember, it is a scrimmage. Winning the game is not the top priority. Scrimmages are the time coaches want to try different line ups, rotations, etc so they can hopefully get a better idea ahead of the season of what may or may not work.

If LSU comes out and loses (or even struggles) vs Miss. Valley St and Nichols to start the season there may be reason for a bit of concern. But I'm not overly concerned about a loss (or a win) in any scrimmage. That is a practice tool, not a game. And coaches approach them differently.

One more season. Help is on the way. The recruiting class is looking like it's going to be top 15. Being in a couple stud transfers and we are back in the tournament.

We had the 15th ranked class last season and look how that turned out.

Hopefully McMahon will throw us a bone and get a techincal called on him in December. Just pretend that you have some fire and passion.
