LSU band expects visible negative impact from cuts
ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - All LSU departments detailed what budget cuts by the state of Louisiana would do to them and the Tiger Marching Band is one of the most visible.
If the budget cuts stick, the LSU Golden Band says there will be a visible negative impact within three years.
The LSU Music Department said its ability to recruit students and teach them properly would take a hit, adding the Swine Palace Theatre and concerts would all be cut back.
Gov. Bobby Jindal is calling for $39 million in cuts from the LSU System because of state budget problems.
The main campus will cut nearly $13 million, the LSU Ag Center must trim $6 million and the Pennington Biomedical Research Center needs to cut just over $1 million.
The cuts include 22 layoffs, 13 from the Baton Rouge campus. The cuts will save the LSU System over $10 million.

You mean to tell me Louisiana does not have $43 million for LSU when the State budget is over $30 billion?
We have to build new Charity and EKL hospitals to have a place to administer Obamacare.
As a GBFTL alum, I can't see how the number of members can be cut back. Either further cuts in travel or cutting the stipend seems likely. Will this affect the new band hall. Lord, I hope not-the current band hall is an embarrassment to the entire university.

In Louisiana, Health Care and Education are taking the biggest hits.
It has nothing to do with a health care system (that desperately needs an overhaul) that the new president is trying to implement.
Anybody know how many band members will be cut?
I watched WAFB's newspiece on it and still dont understand it. They make it seem like its being funded by the university and in reality its funded by LSU Athletics.

It's weird that people are not also concerned about what the cuts are going to LSU's place as an academic university... I mean I don't want the band to be cut either but the point of the school is to provide people with a good education
Anyway, from watching the LSU headlines recently it seems like the band has been funded differently from the football team facilities, coaches salaries etc. For example, at the start of the 2009 season the last round of budget cuts led to the proposal not to send the band to Washington... even tho the football revenue was presumably not affected by the state

From what I understand the band is funded by the Athletic dept.
People are concerned about the additional budget cuts to the university.
But because the University is undergoing budget cuts, the Athletic Dept is required to give more and more money to the university to keep it afloat. The auxillary fee was raised from 3% to 5% and there was talk of raising it to 7% which would have a lot of serious consequences.
From last years budget cuts:
The fact remains that the LSU Athletic Department has been asked to contribute more financially to the University this year than ever before in the wake of state budget cuts to higher education. With an increase in administrative fees levied on University auxiliaries rising from 3 percent to 5 percent, and an increase in student fees the athletic department must pay for its 450 student-athletes, LSU Athletics will be passing an additional $2.5 million to the University in the coming academic year. The athletic department must cut costs in various areas, and expenditures for band trips is one area that will be impacted.
LSU will be sending pep bands to each of the four road conference games in 2009. The band will bus to and from each location on the day of the game for three of those games with no hotel stay in order to facilitate the cost necessary to send a pep band to Washington. There will be no full band trip to any road game except a post-season bowl game. These measures will result in cost savings of $125,000 to $150,000 for the athletics program during the 2009-2010 fiscal year.

I don't think anyone has said yet, but other posters seem to think that the Colorguard and Golden Girls would likely be among the first to be cut. LSU's band is just the right size. Any smaller and it will look like Vandy and Kentucky's bands.
Also, I'll be surprised if the band's travel budget isn't impacted as well. That could mean no more full band trips during the regular season. The full band is supposed to go to ATL for next season's opener against UNC. I imagine that is in jeopardy now.

Maybe the good folks at the local Hooters and/or Gold Club can fund the Golden Girls

It was impacted last year as the full band didnt make a single away game except for the bowl game. However WAFB and others seem to think the actual size of the band playing instruments will decrease. But maybe they are decreasing the size to allow at least one away game for the band to attend.

FSU rents local bands for some away games to save bucks. That is no chit.

It's ridiculous that LSU can't afford to bus the full band to at least one road game each season. Some schools send their full bands to more than one away game. UT's full band travels to every away game within the state of Texas. I'll be pissed if the entire GBFTL doesn't travel to Atlanta for the UNC game next season. LSU's band isn't as big as some others in the SEC. If they cut the number of marching members, I'd think that it will be noticeable.

You'd rather have the FULL BAND band at an OOC game than at a big S.E.C. game?
Which S.E.C. bands are larger than LSU? I thought TB was currently the biggest.......

Tiger band is actually not that big when speaking of college marching bands and the reason for it is because there are only 325 $1000 scholarships available from the university. They let no more, no less in. Other bands that have stipends around $75 a person can afford to let as many people in as they want.
Speaking about the Chick-Fil-A game in ATL against UNC next year, that should not affect the university at all. Much like a bowl game, the school will receive money from Chick-Fil-A for attendint the opener and that money is more then enough to fund the band and football team for the weekend. Someone from the administration needs to come forward and make it clear exactly what is happening. I heard from someone within the band that TGBFTL staff didn't even know about the "downsizing" until that e-mail was sent from public affairs.

Thanks for clearing that up!

LSU was in discussion for the past 5 weeks regarding all parties about the cuts. Seems kind of odd they would not have filled in the results to the band director. LSU was specifically trying to avoid that this go around because they sent out emails and was on the news and people found out that they were being furloughed from the news.
Regarding the Chick-Fil-A game. Is that money put into the SEC bowl money pot which is divied up between all schools? Or specifically a check sent to LSU and a check to North carolina?

Two Tuba's, a third chair clarinet, oboe's completely axed, 4 trumpets(mostly 2nd,3rd chairs), 2 trombone's,and 8 support twirlers.All gone.
My son is in the band and I just talked to him......and as I thought, there are NO oboes in the band. None. He said he got a facebook message from his section leader saying not to worry about rumors going around. Not true.

they will probalby not make the exact cuts known to the general public probably only the music faculty, and the LSU administration. we will see how cuts are effecting the university but the specifics will prob not be made public

If its just a rumor, may want to tell the Chancellor and provost who are sending out emails about budget cuts and mentioning a smaller tiger band.
Also may want to alert the news media as well

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - All LSU departments detailed what budget cuts by the state of Louisiana would do to them and the Tiger Marching Band is one of the most visible.

MAJOR sarcasm was in play since we don't even have twirlers in the first place
