re: Brian Kelly quote I read today about our current roster (The Athletic)

Is he going to fall back on "we have to build a winning culture here" 4 years in when things go sideways?

What do you want him to say?
Want him to say we are winning the national championship? That we are better than every other team?
Coaches don’t speak that way

hat’s not the way the game works. With only a 12 game regular season to work with, the margin for error is small. Yet, you’re dealing with college kids and intangibles happen.
That's exactly how the game works. The margin for error is even bigger now with the playoff system, what are you talking about. You can literally lose 3 games and maybe still get in the running for a championship.

How many times have the most loaded college teams not won a natty, only to have it happen under the same coach during a subsequent year?
There is actual data out there showing that the most talented teams often win the championship.

If you have a good coach that even almost gets there - that’s hard to find. You have to hang in there with these rare finds. It took Kirby Smart until his 6th year, and that guy was pumping out NFL talent. Then after 2 in a row, he’s gone 0-2.
KS made it to the championship game in his 2nd year but how do you think he has so much success? It's because he recruits at the highest level matching what Saban did. Talent matters

quote:That is 100% incorrect, year 3 had severe deficiencies, place the blame where you will but last years team was severely lacking in DB and WR play. I blame the portal and transfers. I also think Kelly was slow to understand that he Saban method of building teams was not something that is going to work, he had to embrace the portal. He did that, LSU ramped up NIL, LSU ramped up the front office so to speak to manage the roster, and it seems we have corrected course quickly.
He has recruited. Very well. LSU has never had a “roster/talent” issue.
My only issue w Kelly was the management of House in Daniels Heisman year, we simply had a glaring issue that was not addressed quickly enough or corrected mid season. There is simply no way the deficits in taht defense were not apparent in Fall camp.

There really isn't any other current coach that I would want as our head coach currently. Maybe Sark, but that's really it. All the other "big name guys" have the same issues.
Day can't beat Michigan
Sark hasn't pushed to the final step
Kirby; is starting to show chinks, with a talent dip.....but still elite.
Dabo: Consistent but really piggy backs on being in the ACC, struggles out of conference.
Deboer: Was very close to a dangerously bad season last year with an extremely talented roster.
Kiffin: I think is an elite play caller, but mediocre head coach
I'm just as ready as everyone for LSU to get in the playoffs, but the reality is that the 2020 and 2021 teams overall talent was laughable. To recruit rebuild the culture and win 10 games, and then get the talent we have now took some serious work.

This isn't true. We haven't spent the money needed to be competitive until this year.

Laugh all you want. Sure it’s hard, but it’s not nearly as hard when you are Mark Emmert. If you are laughing at this, then you are laughing at the notion that mediocre people have a hard time producing excellence, while great people do not. We both probably believe that; I just don’t think of it as a foregone conclusion that we should consider ourselves mediocre and stay within the pack rather than try to outstrip it.
Mark Emmert isn't going to be hiring the next Coach...

This is going to be on Sloan and his ability to call a great game or not.

If he really said that, that’s annoying. Low energy as hell. You’ve been the head coach for four years and you have every ability to recruit at that level at LSU.

Kiffin is also his own worst enemy on offense...too aggressive at times when dont have to be.

Another thread about how our current coach can't get it done.. It's a ritual among our fan base in September

Perfectly stated by Kelly

You fast food fans better get used to 2 losses for most every team in the SEC. Maybe not this year but years to come. Because of the transfer portal every team in the SEC will get beat at least once and probably twice because of the portal. 10 wins in this conference will get you a shot at the playoffs. BK has won 10 games every year

The other team gets to vote.

My problem with Kelly is that he did a horrible job filling out his coaching staff that couldn’t evaluate to save their lives.
The second issue that wasn’t his fault is Woodward being woefully behind what NiL was going to present and prepare accordingly for it.
This program would be toast without Austin Thomas, but I feel good with he and Pettito behind the scenes.

I think BK is a good coach and will keep consistency. Much as this board hates Les he actually reminds me of Les in many ways. This board seems to think Les was a bumbling idiot but you don't sustain the success he did for how long he did by pure luck and the university itself.
Les was a good but flawed coach. BK is the exact same but in different ways. He's a good coach that has his flaws. The obvious ones for me is he can't manage STs and like Les, feels a little stubborn in making decisions until he's forced to.
Case in point LSU always gets off to slow starts under him then he makes adjustments. He should be identifying these problems before the season starts but he waits for it to play out then makes adjustments. I hate this personally. To his credit he's nowhere near as stubborn as Miles was.
I feel like the OL will be his experiment this year where he'll make adjustments midseason and then things will start looking good there. I'd also mention Sloan here. BK historically needs OCs he can control and Sloan's situational PCing last year was atrocious. If LSU misses playoffs this year I feel it will be because of Sloan, OL, and Davis. HC obviously has accountability here. Hard to argue with his decisions on offense though considering how good it has been since he got here so he gets the benefit of the doubt.

I agree getting Pettito, Bolden, and Martin on campus were huge.
