I've never understood the infatuation with Perkins rushing from the edge. If you look at the numbers he's gotten more sacks spying from the stack linebacker position.

People think it counts more seeing him come around the edge of a tackle and chasing down the QB rather than just straight to him. It’s an “it just looks bette” issue.

Sacks and pressures are too valuable to be dismissed using qualifiers. He caused havoc in a lot of games and we don’t beat teams like Bama, Ole Miss, Florida, Arkansas and Auburn his freshman year without his ability to pressure the QB.

I think he needs to Pass rush, he needs to spy QBs, he also needs to find traditional role in a defense that doesn’t have him covering a no name TE 50% of the time

Yep, need to quit moving him around and trying to make him an ILB. He's a weak side LB regardless of alignment and situational pass rusher.

we spend way too much time in nickel for him to be a WOLB.

thats the issue

But you still have a weak side LB in the nickel. He may not lineup in what people consider the traditional weak side alignment but you still have a backside LB.

I agree with you, he’s not a DE for sure but he does need to be rushing the passer on 3rd and long or other obvious passing downs.

Hmmm, I bet no one has ever thought of that before. Ok, that's half the battle to rush him. Do you have connections to the SEC opponents OC and OL coaches so that they don't attempt to block the guy. As a poster mentioned, one game (Arkansas game in 2022 season) has sent some posters into dreamland. Yes, he completely dominated that game..multiple sacks, multiple forced fumbles, etc. But here's the deal...SEC OC and OL coaches took note and realized in 2023 that if you get a body in front of him, he is not going to overpower you. He is not Dallas Turner...he simply isn't.

but not entirely from the edge, which is the discussion. His sack vs bama wasn't a blitz either. It was from the spy. Which is my entire argument so thank you. You can affect the offense from everywhere with Perkins. Not just lined up at edge where he has a size disadvantage.

Pretty sure thats where he will be lined up with Weeks or Penn as other LB

I think this is being done at the insistence of Perkins because he thinks it will help his draft stock. That said, Perkins has been the exemplary teammate and team player since he got here. . You never hear him shooting off his mouth.

I think its because its his best fit and where he can make the most impact over an entire season, not just a few plays per game. Keep in mind, if he's off the edge every play, offenses can scheme him out. Especially since he can't shed a OL block. Hes just fast. If he's off ball, he can do anything. He can blitz at any time from any angle and offenses have to account for that.

Even that Arkansas game his freshman year, he did most of his damage spying from a stack position. He wasn't dominating from the edge.

fun fact 4/8 sacks were crashing from spy position. 3 of his sacks were Arkansas.

He needs to be blitzed from everywhere so OC's have to account for him. Move him around.

Wingo was close with 4.5 sacks vs 5.5 sacks. And he didn't even play in a couple of games late in the season of course. Swinson only had 2 sacks...surprised at that. But he only played 334 def snaps vs Perkins 708. Swinson gave me the impression that on any particular pass play, he might have the best chance to sack the QB. JMHO

While I agree with you I still say he should have been a safety from the get go as a freshman.
