It was certainly an overpay, but he’s more than a 25 HR, .260 hitter. That wouldn’t be particularly valuable for a DH, 1B, or corner OF, but that’s very good offensive output for a 3B. Add in the fact he was arguably the best defensive 3B in the AL last year and he was a Top 20 player in the league. That’s not worth $40M, but your description undersells him.

How is he worth $40 million?
Red Sox desperately needed a right handed bat in their lineup and have been uncharacteristically cheap recently which is why they haven’t won anything in several years. They’re spending again and ready to compete in the AL. Bregman should thrive at Fenway.
