IT'S AN EXHIBITION GAME!! Why burn a redshirt?

Its a game like any other game. In fact it's the game that broke our streak of longest winning season in the country. You burn the redshirt because you are the qb and want to be the qb for the next 3 years before going to the NFL. Now he is just the guy who redshirted and will not play in more than 4 games next year either before he transfers out.

You’re right, he’ll just cover them up.

Y’all have already crowned Myles the starter. Why should Nuss burn an entire year of experience he could have here or elsewhere to better himself?

Some of y’all lack the slightest inkling of intelligence

I love Brad Davis and his comments after the game. However, where I push back is that Nuss could have gone to the coach and said I want to play and I want to help our team win.

He still could earn a redshirt next year backing up Myles Brennan.

I have said that I do not judge or condemn players who opt out who are going to the draft. They believe that is the best decision for them and I will not condemn them for that.

However, when you are still going to be part of the team and you take a Redshirt instead I see that as quitting on your team. As a player you want to compete and help your team he could have gotten Brad to play him.

But I believe with him redshirting this year if Myles does earn the starting Job he will transfer after next season and look to play somewhere else for three years.

I agree w this - Nuss WILL transfer out. He is scared that he won't beat out Brennan or Howard.

Him and Brennan screwed the team. Neither one of those guys will get drafted in early - mid rounds if at all. What do they have to lose.

As far as an exhibition - I don't give a shyte, you play to win at everything you do when you represent LSU. We shouldn't be playing around and just having fun. Play to win or drop football altogether no in-between.

Huge props to Jontre for stepping up to be a leader. Nuss and Brennan aren't leaders. Real leaders are more concerned with the team than themselves. Sacrifice and commitment, if they don't show that trait how will they expect anyone else on the team to show it as well?

Good on Brad Davis for not throwing players under the bus after the game.

Why do people assume this. Brennan was here when he signed. So were Max Johnson and TJ Finley, both who had started multiple games the year before, and with the free year we’re basically the same class as him. And Howard was committed. Plus, he actually got to play a good bit to us year, and there’s no way he would have expected that with the 3 vets above him. His situation is MUCH better now than it was when he signed. He very well may transfer, but I think the redshirt bought us at least him being here for ‘22 and probably ‘23. Otherwise, why sign at all then?

Even if he doesn’t start those years, we need depth and he could provide it as the backup both years. Players get hurt. You need backups. He doesn’t have to be here in year 5 to provide value. And I think looking out for his long-term interest is going to buy us at least another season or 2 where he can provide it. Which would easily make his not playing last night worth it.

And there is zero chance Brad Davis told him he could not play without having discussed it with Brian Kelly first. I just don’t see a scenario where Kelly didn’t either mandate this or at least rubber stamp it.

I don't know, man. I'm not mad at him, just disappointed that we needed a captain and he made a personal decision to not play. He has been afforded that opportunity and made a decision. On the other hand, it allowed Kirklin getting the opportunity that he got last night and playing to the final whistle. That was very cool to witness.

Personally, I think it would have shown leadership and grit to have practiced this month as the #1 and competed with the guys. I just don't see him stick around much passed next season. Probably more to his decision not to play having gone through this season but it looks strange all things considered.

LSU gave the boy free tuition, housing, food and they can't expect something in return?

This board is comical. Nuss could’ve gone to Brad Davis and said that he wanted to play, but I’m sure Davis and BK had conversations about conserving the red shirt over a lame duck game. I can not oversell enough how little that game had meaning outside of sending off the seniors that have hung around in a good way. We are about to get a new offense, a new defense, and a new special teams plan. This game meant absolutely nothing and I’m sure Kelly wants as many horses in the stable with as much eligibility if they transfer or not. There is no upside to him playing other than the TD’s approval of his “chest.”

I don't get this and would like it explained by those who advocate the "meaningless game" or "exhibition game" theory.
If you choose to do so, please advise if you ever actually played the game at HS level or above.
I have played.
And with rare exceptions, the players I competed with and against played the game to win.
Some games were more important than others, sure, but you played every game to WIN.
I have a hard time believing that even with NIL, portal transfers etc, that the primary point of the game is to groom individual players to obtain more lucrative contracts in the NFL>
A small % of college players get such contracts and the average longevity is 3.3 yrs.

That was the right thing for Davis to say and really the only thing he could say that wouldn’t throw Nuss under the bus. Nuss must want to compete in the spring otherwise just go to the portal now. I do think it was a bad decision on his part to sit out and it will cost him with some of his teammates. Who knows CBK may not agree with him sitting either and just keeps him around for depth next year?
