I was there in person.Ugly, ugly scene.Bama and Tennessee fans were throwing ice and trash on the court.
I ran down to courtside.I still in my 20s and ready to rumble.Looked like that might happen forva few minutes.

That's just because no one is man enough to want a piece of him.

I recall that. I also remember UK fans (they had next game) were yelling "Throw Dale out! Throw Dale out!"
They just never got over the 86 Final Four and despised Dale.

I would still pay good money to see Dale Brown beat the shite out of that punk at mid court.

I guess the more people say the same thing, the more it's believed.
But we all just become dumber.

Anyone who remembers this as a great moment is wrong. It was embarrassing and part of Dale’s demise. Truth.

Bob Knight, Indiana basketball coach, responding to a story in which Lousiana State Coach Dale Brown took some shots at him, recalled last season's Midwest Regionals in which LSU led Indiana, 75-66, with only four minutes left. "It didn't look good," Knight said. "In fact, my assistants had just about given up, and so had I. Then I looked down toward the other bench, and I saw Dale Brown standing there. I knew then that we had a chance."
Yeah... Great coach
The issue in that game was Bernard Woodside fouled out. That's when India made their run. And of course Fess Irving just needs to make his free throws. The guy shot 81.4% for his career at the line but missed the two most important free throws in his career. Man, I still feel bad for him. With that said, if Woodside doesn't foul out the game doesn't get to that point.

Remember, immediately after the game Knight praised Brown and LSU. Knight's shot at Brown came later that fall in Sports Illustrated's 1987-8 College Basketball preseason guide. Brown had made the rounds that summer still steaming about the nonsense Knight got away with in Cincinnati that afternoon. Dale maintained Knight bullied and "cheated" is way through and ol' Bob didn't care for it.

I was there as well. Also in my 20s and ready to take on everyone in that moment. Thankfully I was with family at the tournament and cooler heads prevailed. I say thankfully because there were more of “them” than there were of us and younand I would have gotten our asses kicked. To paraphrase Ron White: I don’t know how many of them it would have taken to kick my arse, but I know how many they were going to use.
That was the ugliest scene I’ve ever been in at a sporting event. It was entirely the fault of the officials for letting Tenn play they way they did vs Shaq.

LSU had been to two total NCAA tournaments before Dale Brown and hadn't made the tournament in 18 years when he arrived. He took LSU to 13 NCAA tournaments (including 10 in a row which very few coaches have ever done). He won 4 SEC titles, went to two Final Fours and LSU still has like 3 of the top 4 largest crowds ever for regular season college basketball games for the games in the Dome. He had his faults, but Dale Brown took a loser and created a consistently winning program. He isn't in the College Basketball Hall of Fame for nothing.

I kept thinking about the 1972 Ohio State-Minnesota game where Arkansas' new coach's dad had several players sucker punch and kick Ohio State players late in a game at Williams Arena and many Minnesota fans joined in the melee'.
Yea,we'd gotten in trouble. But there'd been a couple of Alabama and Tennessee fans pretty sore, too.
