The first guy that stands out is Bradie James. As a linebacker he covered space and rarely missed a tackle
This is the correct answer. Other guys may have hit harder or had more highlights but Brady James was an absolute menace and you weren’t getting away if he got his hand on you.

If Albert Richardson isn’t in your top three, you aren’t a real LSU fan.

Felt obligated to create an account just to show Brandon Taylor more love. I'm shocked he's not mentioned in nearly all of the replies. He stands out as the best open field tackler I've ever watched, and it's not even really that close.

Minter second only to DW40 in the open but Minter in traffic was better

Reminded me of just how absolute he was as an open field tackler. Nothing got by him.
Bama receiver got by him when a tackle meant victory. Instead he got out of bounds and Bama won. Great player, but not perfect.

Mike Calais before he was hurt

Devin White, Kevin Minter, & Kendall Beckwith we’re both great in open field from LB position. From safety spot Jamal, Laron Landry, Eric Reid, Brandon Taylor, Chad Jones

Mike Williams, from "72 - 74. We did not play on TV as much back then, but he never missed a tackle in all the games I saw at Tiger Stadium back then. Also, was King of the Clothesline. Saw him hit a dude in full stride at the Tiger 1 yard line and the ball was placed at the 1 yard line. Killer clothesline tackler.

To be fair, most people posting in this thread have fathers that were 11 or 12 years old picking boogers out of their nose when Albert Richardson played. They haven't a clue who he is or how great he was...

Yes, he was before most TD posters’ time for sure. Google search tells me he played from 1979 to 1982.
So, most people that remember him would have to be at least in their 50’s now.
I would guess that at least 75% of TD posters are under 50 years old.

Yeah. Hoping he’s putting in the work this off-season. I want him to be memorable for the right reasons this year.

I'd have to put Billy Cannon up there.
I watched him play as a senior at Istruma and all four years at LSU. Players played both ways then up thru '57. Nobody ever got past him in the open field - and he not only took them down, he planted them with authority.
Of course, the rest of the team was pretty good too, so he didn't get a lot of chances in the secondary. And after 57 he only played half of defensive possessions.
I'm sure regular defensive stars have much more impressive stats - but to compare his work wrt the chances he had to show it, he was spectacular.
btw - I'm pretty sure it was Cannon that stopped Ol Miss on the 1/2 yd line on that 4th down play in the '59 Halloween game.
