whoa now, although our defense was good, they were totally lost in stopping the simple dive play which florida pretty much owned us on all night.

Noob, LSU's D last night is the first D to hold UF to only 13 points since Meyer took over the helm. How many years is that?

Maiden day posting on the Rant = FAIL!

they had help from UF's extremely conservative playbook, but fundamentally looked good at times

Anyone who thinks that we have a "Championship" defense, doesn't watch enough football.

I agree with ShortyRob, Chavis is doing the best with what he has. Our DL is mediocre at best. Our LB's are improving. Our secondary has a super CB in PP. The safties are coming around. Hawkins has been solid, other than getting reacharounded last night.
Chavis has done a respectable job. But, this is a good defense at best.

Honestly, yes, holding Florida to 13 points (7 of which were due to a ridiculously bad none called hold) is a championship quality defense.
for one game, yes... lets see how they do against auburn and others before we crown this D as a championship D...

it works if you don't give up big plays, esp crucial big plays

Good point. But with all the talent we have, why haven't we seen more blitz packages? It's like hes afraid to take a chance, even when we need it.

The problem we're having is that when your interior DL is a liability, you have to use your back 7 for run support AND still cover the passing lanes. You could also use the back 7 for blitz packages but you're almost certainly gonna give up some huge plays.

Chavis has basically decided that the following are true.

1) Our offense cannot afford to be in a track meet and will have trouble coming from behind

2) That he believes his back 7 are VERY hard to deal with as the field gets shorter.

Truth is, this has proven to be correct.

Yes, I admit that Bend but don't break is INFURIATING to watch. But, it is really hard to argue that as the season has progressed, the team has gotten pretty good at it.

We had another pretty good coach who used this approach. Arnsparger. I'd take those results again.

Yep and he's getting some improvement out of them week by week, even if not necessarily by leaps and bounds. The D hung in there 'til the end with almost nil on the other side of the ball, to be sure.

they were running plays that normally get them much bigger chunks of yardage...in addition, there was no reason for Urban to play last night close to the vest, I don't see any reason that he wouldn't have blown LSU out if he thought he could.

That is what drives me round the bend. Given UF's 360 or so yards on the ground game average, LSU's D did manage to hold 'em to 198. I do miss the old shut down Ds from from days of yore at times though. As much as I appreciate LSU's achievements in this decade - and I do - it just doesn't seem like LSU's D without a smash-mouth, shut down D from the opening gun 'til the last sec ticks away.

But, the D hung in there with little or no support from the other side of the ball and managed to contain UF's speed for the most part under trying circumstances, so mega-props to 'em for that.

I thought the defense played pretty damn good last night. Other than the offside penalties, I couldn't have been happier.

I understand our DL is miles behind the rest of our defensive units. I just hope that when the problems get solved on the line that this "bend but don't break" doesn't continue

The problem with this team is the offense, not the defense. /THREAD.

Its really idiotic to say "UF was playing conservative" to discredit the defensive performance. What happened when UF tried to go to the outside, run a reverse, go to a wide out ( besides when Cooper illegally grabbed Hawkins ), etc? LSU stopped them, that's what. UF had to run up the middle & throw to the TE because it was not only the best options but their only options. Stopping bitching about the D's play last night ffs.

FL typically uses "bend don't break" philosophies. Your O didn't help you out last night, but most teams are able to move the ball between the 20's reasonably well against us.

TV did a good job of showing it last night - FL's secondary is just insanely good this year. Now that the DL is coming along, it's hard to differentiate, especially against an O that's not able to get out of their own way.

What I'd worry about with your D is why they can't stop lining up in the freakin' neutral zone. That was embarrassing.

Do you honestly believe what you wrote? LSU was 1 play away from a tie game with 7 minutes left in the game. They did not want to leave the game that close. You think they weren't trying to score? Hell...all there had to be was a fluke play and accidental pick six and you had a tie game.

Consider right before half time, Holliday was crashed out of bounds and a flag wasn't thrown. We were inside the 40 at that time. That would've put us at the 25 or so. Of course, the next play was a pick. You can't say LSU wasn't going to score had that penalty been called.

LSU's defense did the job. If the o moves the ball and gets some time of possession, they get a little rest.

If we field a good offense plus this very solid defense, we go far and have a chance to be SEC champs. However, with the O we have right now, we will be in shape for the CapitalOne bowl or maybe the Cotton or Chick-Fil-A
