I just don't have a problem with the NCAA and officials trying to protect OUR players.
Sure, like the Refs protected LSU's QB in the 'bama game when he took a speared helmet to the chest with an official standing right there ... as opposed to the official way back down field tossing the hankie on the Chad Jones decleater tonight.
If it was such an obvious penalty, how come the pair of refs standing closest to the two players, both close with clear sight-lines, weren't the ones littering the field with hankies?

Come on, winning cures all...Winning the SEC, or at least the SEC West would be a step in the right direction.
True, but in order to get to the SECCG to have a shot at winning it, you're going to have to be able to get past 'bama (so long as Saban hangs round there) and probably Petrino's up and coming Razorbacks as well.
Blast it, Chicken, I've hoped against hope (and then some) that Miles would find a way to grow into a SEC HC ... because I hated the thought of the LSU program having to rebuild all over again, again.
Today, coupled with the ongoing poor clock management, glaring lack of overall toughness and on-the-field discipline in the post-Hester/Dorsey/Steltz, et.al. era, along with the inexplicable personnel decisions over the course of CLM's entire tenure at LSU, it's clear CLM is never going to be anything but in-over-his-head and drowning as a HC in SEC FB.
Nothing could have made that any clearer than that which culminated in the major cluster-frick at the end of the game today. The one CLM post-game presser I had the misfortune of catching on the sports news even this far north put the exclamation point on that.
But, then, like I've written here all along: I'm biased insomuch as I'd never hire a HC for LSU FB who wasn't hardcore defense. But, that's just me. Sure, you need offense, but defense in the SEC still wins championships.

You spent a decade or so in brain injury research, too?
As to Lafell and others, it is what it is for them and their generation and culture.
Why ridicule D-Byrd when you have no way of really knowing how much of his brain injury affects both speech and his overall communication.
Those of us who have worked in that field know just how it difficult recovery from these types of brain injuries can be. No matter how hard Demetrius works, he may never make a complete recovery. Though I certainly hope that he will, of course.

FTR, Demetrius Byrd was critically injured in an awful car accident last Spring prior to the draft. He suffered an absolutely terrible brain injury, from which he is mighty blessed to have recovered THIS well, slurred speech and all.

Not that you should particularly give a crap what I think, but I do like your perspective. Reminds me a bit of a post-game interview with Peyton Manning after his receivers had been perpetually roughed up by the Patriots LBs and DBs during one of those early Colts/NE match-ups.
The trying to be helpful sports interviewer asked him if he was upset the refs hadn't called more defensive holding and pass interference on NE. To which Peyton replied, "Nope, I just wish our defense had done more of it too!"

Not much on specifics are you? Generalities probably aren't what's called for heading into the teeth of the SEC schedule.

I talked to the guy for 5 minutes yesterday. None of you would say any of this face to face.
I would ... precisely because I believe CLM would be the first to admit (not that he ever could publicly, at least not unless he'd be looking back on a long and storied tenure as LSU's HC), that what's involved in coaching in the SEC took him aback at the outset and he's had to grow and adjust and make adjustments, much as he discretely started to do even before the end of last season when he quietly prepared to revamp things on the defensive side of the ball and did so after the season.
That doesn't mean he isn't still growing into what I hope will ultimately prove to be one of the finest, longest tenured HCs LSU has ever had grace Tigah stadium.
I think maybe Crowton hasn't to this point made the adjustment to SEC FB that an LSU OC needs to make. I think if his offense ends the season with as little output as it has to this point, he may not see the start of another season as LSU's OC.
I think that because of the way CLM handled his defensive woes at season's end '08. Gives me every reason to believe Miles will do the same on his favorite side of the ball if things don't show marked improvement, youthfulness at QB and new starters on the O line taken into account, by season's end.
So, yep, if CLM would ever grace me with a 1-on-1, I'd love to have the opportunity to discuss these things with him ... with the understanding that he's the ball coach and my expertise lies in another profession, of course.
But I do get your overall meaning, methinks.

We do not disagree.
But then I'm a very defensive-minded lady and if it were left to me I'd probably never hire anything but a defensive-minded HC in the first place (yep, I know there have been, and always will be exceptions, but, damn!, who doesn't just love a shut down D?). But it is what it is for the time being and just as the problems on the defensive side of the ball began to improve with the off-season restructuring and Chavis, there's little to do for the foreseeable future but hope for the same on the offensive side of the ball if things don't improve.
Again, what you said.

We are spoiled, you know? But this isn't the same conference tOSU or USC play in, it's the SEC.
When JJ earned the starting QB job over JL last Spring into this August, it meant growing pains ... which I think are coupled with Crowton's failure/inability to adjust to SEC FB and I just don't think he does well developing young QBs.
re: Your talking directly to Les, what could you offer?

Speculation at this point. It's a rare game where a defensive HC doesn't go with a gut feeling in circumventing a given defensive play call/set; ditto with offensive HCs, just like Miles' play call change based on his zoned in QB late in the UGA game for the go ahead TD run by Chuck Scott. But, then, when JJ made the request, he'd already led one come from behind drive to retake the lead and CLM made a decision to go with his young QBs instinct for his own reasons we aren't privy to.
It's what HC's do. If they get it right more than wrong, they have a very long tenure. If they get it wrong on the whole more often than not, they don't. They are painfully aware of these facts at major 1A programs.
They don't enjoy the luxury of speculative presuppositions like we fans do on the Rant. Hey, it's what makes the Rant the Rant, right?

1) Les Miles is getting in the way
Proof? Something other than just his tracking the plays called on his play card? (Something most, if not all, offensive HC's have a tendency to do ... just like defensive HC's for the most part follow the play calling/defensive sets of their DCs moreso than the O side of the ball.)
Other than, of course, Miles following the instincts of his young QB on the play change that led to the final go ahead TD at UGA ... which is something HC's sometimes do based on the flow of the game and gut instincts. The buck stops with the HC if it's a bad call and they know it. It's probably part of that thing about the buck ultimately stopping with the HC or something.

You know that ain't gonna happen on the Rant, but you did try.
FWIW, I'm not sure Crowton is the answer even if you bring in an assistant to work with the QBs. I just don't think he makes the transition to SEC FB very well. Even Meyer admitted the speed, especially on D overwhelmed him his first year at UF ... he made the adjustments on the offensive side of the ball after that first season.
Crowton hasn't adjusted to 1A FB in the SEC. I think perhaps he gets discretely moved on after this season if he doesn't introduce at least some misdirection plays into the mix + see his O develop the solid beginnings of an identity the rest of the season, starting with Auburn's porous defense in two weeks.
I think Miles steps in during this week and works with Crowton to get some kind of reasonable offensive production - as much as you can get with the inexperience at QB and with the new starters on the offensive line - to get through the season. He may then decide to discretely move Crowton out. CLM knows the buck ultimately stops with him.
