2012 Bama game sealed Chavis' fate with me personally. That was an inexcusable fail on his defense. Change is good, I'm glad he left and there is new blood and energy.

Ryan Perrilloux was good for at least an extra two wins in 2008 and in 2009, respectively.
Tyrann Mathieu was good for at least an extra win in 2012.
Eric Reid, Barkevious Mingo, Sam Montgomery, Bennie Logan, Michael Brockers, and Kevin Minter almost certainly would have brought us a national championship if paired with the 2013 offense.
And Odell Beckham, Jarvis Landry, Trai Turner, Jeremy Hill, Ego Ferguson, and Anthony Johnson would have been good for probably another three wins in 2014.

These aren't systemic problems... Miles made the hard decision and kicked two superstars off the team because they were cancerous, and has felt the effects of the new CBA to a greater degree than any other coach in CFB.

If he can adapt and keep his players from leaving after three years, he'll start winning the championships he was denied in 2009, 12, 13, and 14.

The trend is your friend. The trend has been downward for the last 5 years except for one anomaly in 2011. No doubt the recruiting is off the charts for now, but these players never seem to develop into superstars as the critical positions enough to carry a team.

Since 2007, Except for 2011, we have no BCS bowl appearances, no BCS bowl wins, 4 straight losses to our rival, losing SEC record, losses to Moo St and Arky cellar dwellers, getting beat by the likes of ND, cluster frick games like Tenn and Ole Miss, an OC coaching carousel, and no significant QB development except for 1 year, and he was a transfer they lucked up on and fell in our lap.

You do the math.

if I'm looking at trends for the last 10 years or so, it looks like to me we are due for an upward trend for at least a year or 2

Let's see these receivers produce before declaring them the best. Jennings is the worst QB in college football but the WR corp did little to help him out.

I always tend to agree with your attitude, but never so much as now.

Oh, I agree that sometimes change in and of itself is good. Maybe Chavis and the staff WAS getting a little stale.

I hope like hell the changes work out for the good, but I'm just not optimistic about Steele at DC.

This is the most ridiculous argument I've ever heard... shared by many on this site. We take highly regarded players out of high school and put them into the NFL as first and second day draft picks as juniors.

And you would criticize the coaches for lack of development?

What kind of historian are you? Ah yes the kind who likes to negate anything positive and also always say except for

More than shredded... Steele had a mental breakdown that game and was calling plays that he ran with the Panthers in the 90s and nobody on their D had any idea what the hell he was talking about. And Steele is a nervous wreck out there. It's been reported that on game days he sometimes forgets to eat, sometimes pukes, and has had to receive IVs after games. And the bowl game vs WVU isnt the narrative people run with... Steeles' D got worse each year at Clemson, was fired from there, and was demoted while at Bama. That's the narrative people run with. It was just capped off by that bowl game.

SU has potential at QB in Harris, but not enough separation to name him starter...even though Jennings has been arrested and suspended.

Miles will not name a starter until the week prior to McNeese regardless of the separation. While you may hear in the media there is separation, Miles won't say there is, nor is there any reason to. Harris will start game 1 and if he doesn't he should transfer at year's end because if he can't beat out Jennings this year, he never will.

The feeling I get is there is a big hole in a powerful ship. I hope Miles gets it and uncorks the power and plugs the hole. I think Miles is choosing to exit this year and really is in maintenance mode while O and others work like they have something at stake.

Did you feel that way in 2010? How about 2002?

Can you elaborate?

I would also like to see some links concerning Steele's questionable mental strength. I'm not disputing this as I have heard the stories for a while.

It seems that LSU is always one critical piece short in any given year. I'm having a hard time with continuing to write this off to bad luck.

I really want to believe this season is going to be good (10+ wins), and will lead to an even better year next year. The reason I started the thread was to gauge optimism versus pessimism.

I am a known Les Miles detractor. I readily admit that fact. I have been wrong about Les on occasion and I have been right about him as well.

I think this year is pivotal for many reasons - and unlike most Miles detractors, have a good feeling overall about the season and the future of the program.

That said, it is hard to divert attention away from the FACTS...we are thinner at DT than any time since Miles has been here, we are going to start a corner back with very little experience (perhaps even a true freshman) on the road against a Heisman candidate in the second game of the season, we don't know anything about our defensive ends and we have no clue about how our QBs will play...or even who will start.

Those are all very troubling when you look at them as a person knowledgeable about football and this conference, while taking the purple glasses off for a moment.

The reason, I suppose, I feel good about the season is we have LF7, we have Jamal Adams, we have a stud receiving corp, we have Tre White, we have an experienced OLine and we have Coach O.

The funny thing about this season too is the schedule...we could very easily start the season 1-2 and then run the table until the Bama game. Excluding Auburn, our toughest games start with Bama. So, as our QB and new corners and DLinemen gain experience, we should be in a better position to win the big games later in the season.

The problem is if we start 1-2, which is not likely, but certainly possible, will the fans panic and the team follow suit?

Miles needs this season to be good.
