I was nervous but I actually thought he was going to mow down the 2 hitters. I did not expect him to throw a hanging breaking ball on the first pitch. I was expecting him to go heavy fastball.

After he got hit on that first pitch my nerves went sky high.

Yep, put me in the 'oh shiate' category, BUT after the lead-off guessing right on the breaking ball, he struck out the next two. He kept his composure and pounded the zone. He'll be ready to help out, if needed, in the next series.

I think Mayers is definitely in the situational pitching category. I would never bring him in with the bases loaded, though...

Give him a chance to see if he can get it over the plate. If yes, let him go. If he throws 4 consecutive balls, yank him and try someone else.

Which was really an insane take. Mayers had only given up 3 hits to RHs all season and has the highest K/9 of any regular bullpen arm.

Next time just assume Johnson knows what he’s doing.

Perfect spot for Mayers. In my head it was either gonna be a walk or a K. A walk right there would have been an acceptable outcome. Who know he'd hijack that first pitch

I’m really surprised at how many posters in this thread equate inserting Mayers with giving up and playing 9 the next night. After the first swing the next two batters looked lost against him

That’s considered off speed today. Crazy how the game has progressed.

Mayers had only given him three hits the entire season before that pitch. It was a perfect situation to put him in. First base open so he could walk the batter. My only concern was that he’d toss one in the backstop, not that anyone can hit him.

I was worried he was going to sail one to the backstop

he’s been really good lately for 1 inning at a time.

my biggest concern was a bunt and just really not way of stopping it

I did yell frick really loud in front of my wife and 2 children after that hit

I didn’t like the 1st called pitch

Why? Flamethrower comes in against a good hitting team that you would think is expecting heat and throws a good front door slider in a tough spot and the hitter happened to beat him. Bras has a better chance to make the play if he wasn't playing in to cut off the run.

His first pitch was a batting practice ball. Left a slider hanging in the air.

Really, really bad pitch. He had the goods after that one though.

There is no planet where that was a good pitch. It's not the call I'm talking about, but the execution. It hung in the air. Might as well let them hit off a tee.

Truthfully, at that point I figured CJJ was just playing for the elimination game the next day.

Yep.

He didn't want to use Thursday's starter, Eyanson, in a tie game. But he was also out of better options in the BP.

Hindsight is 20/20. The scouting report showed Mayers was an 80% fastball pitcher. Arkansas knew that as well. LSU probably figured Mayers could get a "surprise" changeup over for strike 1 in that spot with a hitter likely sitting on a fastball. Particularly when batters usually like to take a pitch or two with a new pitcher on the mound. The batter was aggressive, and didn't miss a first pitch to hit.

Nervous, because the chalk move would have been to walk the RH, bring in Williams to face the LH with forces at every base.

Jay said post game his strategy was to hope Mayers K’d both batters. He missed the 1st pitch, but K’d two 1st team all SEC guys back to back. Pretty strong performance outside of that fat 1st pitch

He needed to just throw the heat. Don’t get out of the comfort zone on the first pitch.

Mayers is like a streak shooter in basketball- when he has control, he can be brilliant for an inning or two. But then, suddenly he can't find the strike zone, gives up a walk and time to pull him. I remember Ben Mcdonald talking about him, saying with his velocity, the big leagues will definitely draft him for his potential.
