Offensively they were probably as efficient as any team Wade has had in an opening game. If Days can keep himself out of foul trouble he is an All SEC player. The guy is maybe the most efficient player Wade has ever had. He can score and rebound at a ridiculous clip. Thomas was everything he was hyped to be. However, I was surprised he took 21 shots. There are a lot of stars on this team. You have to wonder if that many attempts for one guy will be the norm or outlier? If the former, does Wade run the risk of the other, veteran players, getting rubbed the wrong way about it?
The lack of defense was a huge disappointment. With as good a this team is offensively they don’t have to be Virginia-level good defensively. But they can’t let a team this poor make the most 3’s in a game the program has made in 7 years. Improvement on that end of the floor is was Wade stressed was absolutely necessary and what will be the difference between a good season and potentially great season. The individual pieces are there.

That was a weak arse tech call. He hit a shot in a big moment and chirped one thing at his defender and they T’d him up. That’s ridiculous. I get if it was already a chippy game or if he wouldn’t stop jawing or something more but one bark shouldn’t be a tech.

Pretty safe to assume it wasn’t just the first chirp or bark.

I don’t know. Didn’t watch. Seems like they should have posted a damn stronger victory margin against a no-name school, though, even in bouncy ball.

I am curious as to why you think the post scoring will come. Where will it come from? He showed little ability to score regularly inside last year. He plays low to the ground for a 6’ 9” guy. I’ve seen no good back to the basket moves. I want it to come, but I just don’t think he can be a dominant inside scorer or defender based on what I’ve seen. He has been, and will be, a significant contributor, but he is not the 5-star, first round pick he was made out to be.

We have all watched Smart play for 2 years now. It’s obvious when he starts alpha dogging and feeling himself and talking shite. That was the first moment in that game where we saw that out of him.
I’m not saying he didn’t talk shite the whole game, I’m saying it wasn’t out of hand. If the refs felt like that bark was over the line, they should have warmed him first. They have to remember that college sports is also supposed to be entertaining to watch and taking emotions like that completely out of the game is a disservice IMO.

The question is if we continue to start 3 guards until Manning returns from injury. But until Penn-Johnson or Shareef show more than just a role player or off the bench playing style I think we stay with the 3 guard look and maybe Cook or Gaines sneak their way into the lineup as that 3rd guard. And once Leblanc can play in conf play, he could start with a 3 forward look along with Days and Watford.

Watford scored like 14 a game in SEC play last year, almost every bucket was in the paint.
