Was hoping this update would be in time for my morning dump. Bathroom always fills up after the safety meeting.

I am very excited to see what these guys can do. I am glad we have Shores for multiple seasons.

This made me a little sad.

The depth of talent on the staff is incredible. Only thing left is to find out how well that talent can execute pitches and keep games tight long enough for the offense to bust it open

I think the most interesting thing to keep track of with the starters is if/(in my opinion when) Shores gets into the weekend rotation. That will force a competition between Hurd and Floyd for the Saturday spot. I think Taylor and Little will be used on the back end the bullpen. They both are capable of throwing 2-3 innings to end games, which I think we will see this season.

I feel like Taylor could slide into the closer role due to his stuff.

I’m not sure we have a set closer. Too many strong arms you can go to. And you want to keep Taylor’s innings up to be ready to start. I think he’s #4 ahead of shores but just barely.

I had speculated for a while on tandem starters. I thought we would have done it last year due to not having enough guys to turn the line up over more than once.

But Jay flat out said it's in the plans for this season for the opposite reason. So many guys that can go starter type innings.

Yep. I think it’s Skenes/Taylor, Hurd/Shores, Floyd with game 3 being a more typical game where you could use your lefties, Collins, Edwards, etc. If Floyd has control issues as he uses his offspeed more, I can see Taylor taking over Sundays. He’s way under rated. From how he finished last season to his summer/fall/spring, he’s been our second best guy behind Skenes.

Johnson has said he wants one of his best arms out the bullpen in high leverage situations. I agree with a lot of what you are saying and for those reasons is why I see Taylor on the back end. I think Shores will be too good to keep him out the weekend rotation and he is also the future of the staff. Only thing that worries me with him is arm fatigue down the stretch being he is a freshman.

Honestly, I don't think you have a right/wrong answer to the situation. Multiple guys will be able to do multiple roles at a high level. This pitching staff is really deep and even the less thought of guys (Edwards, Collins, etc) are reported of showing big improvements.

The luxury is you may have a really good pitcher on tap to start midweek games
I still think you see some johnny wholestaff games once you hit sec play to keep everyone available for weekend duty

Sounds good, but at the same token, you have to pull someone else out. So is he going to better as a freshmen than sophomore Hurd or junior Ty Floyd, or sophomore Grant Taylor?

Wasnt he referring to Collins when he said this? He’s been really really good and Jay has spoken very highly of him. Kid had to grind to get to where he is now and I think he’s reaching the potential that Jay saw when he recruited him.

tandem starters

It seems sensible, but I think it will be hard to plan that way consistently. Especially if the focus is on regimen & not matchups

Curious to see how it works. There are other ways to keep guys stretched out if not, obviously

Maybe it’s his plan up until SEC starts and then he will reevaluate and adjust having 5 guys ready to start and for 6 innings each. Would be a huge luxury.

It will be easier to do in OOC for sure.

And someone will get hurt, some will under perform. Some might end up just fitting better in the bullpen. Good problem to have

Jay all but said the startrs are Skenes, Hurd, Shores. From CJJ about starters:
quote:

The guys in contention for it (aside from Skenes) are Chase Shores, Thatcher Hurd, Ty Floyd, Grant Taylor and Christian Little.

Then when asked about the closer he listed a couple of relievers and then said,
quote:

So, it’s kind of that grouping I just gave you. A couple of those guys, and then I’d say Collins, Cooper, Ackenhausen, Taylor, Floyd, Little.
