Speaking as a former ump for a long time, his step and hip was to home - deceiving the runner. Can’t do that. It’s a balk.

Absolutely!

Anyone remember when LSU vs Mississippi St, a similar situation where the Ms St pitcher balked and threw the LSU runner out.
Skip Bertman come out and gave that Ump the biggest arse chewing I have seen in baseball. The next time it happened, the Ump called a balk.

Can't make that observation from the angle provided. It is very close.

It’s also not even the issue here. The issue is he clearly stepped to home plate.

There’s a reason that’s called a “balk move”,

What is called a "balk move" is done by right handed pitchers, not lefties. This wasn't a balk move, it was just a balk.

Clear balk.

Game should have been finished in protest.

The first base ump was letting their starter get away with some borderline moves to first as well. But this one was particularly egregious. When you watch it live, it is the textbook definition of a bulk.

I get it, it’s the norm so that’s why I said I’m ok with being wrong if it’s not a balk. But they’re all deceptive, so now we have umps trying to figure out if it was too deceptive or not.

Lefties are generally allowed a 45 degree angle on that pickoff, go watch andy pettite’s move. But to be fair, thats probably closer to 60 degrees. Puts the onus on the ump, at home, good luck getting that call.

Jay Johnson, Braun and the first base coach aren't Ole Miss announcers though.

That's the move Andy Pettitte got away with for years. It's probably a balk but they let it slide more often than not.

Yes, a “balk move” for a righty is buckling your left knee as you spin to throw to 1st. This was the lefty version of a “balk move”. It’s more of a category than a singular descriptor.

I haven’t seen any angle of that.

At that time, I don't believe. I'm guessing you can't challenge a balk regardless, but could be wrong.
