Well, I agree KeKe went because of his huge upside, but it won't mean much if he cannot develop other pass rush moves to get to the QB. And that is what I'm banking on them teaching him in the NFL. At LSU he just relied on his speed to get by OLineman and that didn't always work to well as folks saw in his career. I wish him the best. Sam on the other hand is in the same boat. Needs to learn more pass rush moves because he relies on speed and power to overrun pass blockers. They say Brick Haley coached DLineman in the NFL, but I can't tell.

Time will answer this question now that both are in the NFL. I do know that Sam gave his all to the fans at Tiger Stadium. Both were a strong part of one the best defenses in college football. This is something I will never forget.

Sam has ended up at another fanatical fan base. He will feed off the energy inside Reliant and that will be a recipe for greatness. He is an emotion based player and Houston will feed the beast.

He knows his words were twisted during the interview and my guess is that chip on his shoulder is bigger now than ever before.

Good luck to them both. God help those who face them.

Sam didn't look like he cared in a game this year. Watchin him in pregame was completely different this year than last. Mingo got better.

So you definitely missed the USC game?

Yet somehow managed half the sacks as Sam.

don't necessarily have trouble understanding why Mingo was rated higher by NFL talent evaluators, but the thing that does bother me is that Sam managed to fall out of the second round. Even if his ceiling is a solid starting strongside 4-3 end, isn't that worth a second round pick?
You saw a lot of drafts based on measurables this weekend.
Look at the guy the Saints signed as an undrafted free agent, Chase Thomas from Stanford. He had college numbers (against potent offenses like Oregon, no less) that were excellent; but he wasn't big or fast. And so he dropped.

Sam better be glad he got drafted when he did.

If you add Mingo's TFLs and sacks together, you get Sam's TFL total. And then he had 8 sacks on top of that. I'll listen to measureable people all day talk about Mingo's superior bench presses or whatever, but let's not pretend Mingo was better at LSU than Sam. He wasn't.

Not even in his dreams. You have to be either extraordinarily productive or extraordinarily talented to be drafted that high. Sam was never anywhere close to either of those.

You're confusing the gushings of star struck fans for sober analyses by experts.

Sam had 17 sacks and 26.5 TFL the last two years. He was never going in the top 5 but people thinking he wasn't productive are confused.

SAm is Lazy

I disagree. I think the word "lazy" is used too flippantly, and I see the opposite of a lazy player on the field.

There was the issue with Moffitt, but that was apparently a motivational tactic (IMO, a poor one) in response to a missed class. Moffitt tweeted this:

quote:

@ChaddScott The pic from office window is old news. These guys had all missed a class. Great kids and hard workers. #tigertough #LSU

quote:

not elite as a pass rusher

What? You know, if Sam would have come back for his senior year he most likely would have broke the all-time sack record at LSU.

And remember, his RS Fresh season was cut short by injury. So, in about 2 1/2 years he got 19 sacks. The record at LSU is 25.

quote:

not big enough to be a dominating Strong Side end.

By "Strong Side End," are you referring to a 4-3 D? Because Sam will definitely play OLB in the Texans' 3-4, and he's plenty big to fit that position.

Compare Sam's size to other strongside LBs in the NFL:

Sonic Sam - 6'3" 262 (Combine measurement)

LaMarr Woodley - 6'2" 265
Anthony Spencer - 6'3" 250
Ahmad Brooks - 6'3"259
Justin Houston - 6'3" 258
Connor Barwin - 6'4" 268
Paul Kruger - 6'4" 270
Ryan Kerrigan - 6'4" 260
Courtney Upshaw - 6'2" 272
Quentin Groves - 6'3" 265
Erik Walden - 6'2" 250
Shaun Phillips - 6'3" 250
Clay Matthews - 6'3" 255 (Has lined up on both sides for the Packers.)

quote:

CAn't believe the texans wasted a pick on sam with the intention of him being a 3-4 backer

Again, I disagree. I think it's a great 3rd round pick. I think he fits well with what the Texans want him to do.

The question I have is Sam's coverage ability on pass plays. If he's matched up with an athletic TE or a shifty RB, I'd be concerned. I'm just not sure if he's got the fluidity, hips or change-of-direction to keep up with these types of players.

Another issue may be his ability to beak down and make an open field tackle in space. Especially against a shifty RB. With the way Sam moves and his aggressive mentality, he may be susceptible to moves (jukes, shakes, etc.).

I think it's all based of of potential. Mingo might not have reached his full potential because he was playing out of his projected nfl position.

Also, regarding all those labeling Mongtomery as "crazy", I would argue that that is an unfair characterization, but also I'll point out that you have be at least a bit crazy to be successful in the NFL trenches.

I interviewed Sam a few times during his tenure here, and I always came away feeling that he was an intelligent guy (not always evidenced by his technique on the field, but alas) who cared deeply about football and wanted to get better everyday.

I think his No. 1 signifier character-wise though was the fact that he was unfailingly candid, which obviously led him to give that unfortunate answer to the talent evaluators about taking plays off against Armpit State. Just about every player at his position did the same thing, but he was the only one who would admit it.

I think the Texans got a big time steal and Sam will be a solid NFL player for the rest of this decade.

It's okay, Big Sam is here in H-Town and he will learn from the best #99 JJ Watt. Sam just landed into one of the best defenses in the NFL, Wade Phillips and the boys will make Sam into the real deal.

Didn't read this whole thread but my thought is the large disparity we ended up seeing between Mingo and Montgomery began with Sam adding like 50 lbs. of "muscle" before last season. He simply didn't have the same explosion, stamina or playmaking ability as a result.

He is not. They both will make noise in the NFL. Sonic Sam has more upside in totality, but Mingo may get more Sports Center highlights. The Texans get a slightly better deal than the Browns.
