Good recruiter, average coach. Grimes had his ups and downs, but to his credit the OLine did improve as the season went on.

Our olines have underperformed for years. That started before we got Grimes, but it continued until a few games into this season.

Grimes is a solid recruiter and an above average coach. Definitely not an impressive coach.

I guess everyone has to get their start somewhere as an OC...just surprised it’s at a program like BYU

My guess is BYU head coach has a year to turn things around or you will be looking for a new head coach.

Grimes excels at coaching the blocking and run game.
Pass protection could have been better and he did not recruit enough tackles, but that could have been Miles philosophy.

I will give Grimes a lot of credit for handling the line at LSU this year especially with injuries to two starting veteran tackles and having to use 2 true freshman most of the SEC season.

As you can see, very mixed reviews of Grimes as OL coach.
I have never heard of him being considered as an OC, even here when we had a recent vacancy.

Grime's leaving must have been on the radar. Eaux hired a seemingly better position coach about an hour later.
Who knows? He might have left just ahead of a pink slip>

Somehow, someway, this will turn into a 10 page coach O / Les Miles thunderdome megathread

Any coach on the offensive side of the ball is likely to get Luke warm reviews at best from LSU fans . You have to factor that in.

I can tell you that he is highly respected inside the program.

I would say as far as organizational skills, he's a good one but have no clue how he will be calling plays.

Can identify players, OLman for sure, I think Les Miles got in the way of that his first couple of year bc since O has taken over, the OLman he's identified seem to be legit and not all were highly rated HS players, so he can spot talent. Not sure how tough he makes his players, and then that could have been just the players we had starting for him. This years crew of OLman were tough and he's the guy who identified them.

For BYU it's an ok hire but a gamble as well. Y'all may hit gold here or bust.

I had been pumping for the last two years that O/Miles should have upgraded and gotten rid of him. I thought he was a mediocre recruiter due to the fact that he always just took average guys. Didnt even know he could call plays as an OC. When I first heard he was in the running for a D1 OC position I laughed out loud.

Good luck and stop ringing door bells.

I dont know but for a career position coach to get his first opportunity at an offensive coordinator position at a decent program like BYU makes me think Coach O let him borrow "The Binder" for the interview.

Maybe he hired Ponamsky as his Mister of Propaganda.

We had a lot of O-Line guys leave the program under Grimes. The group that stayed was good, but we also lost some needed quality depth. Is that Grimes' fault? Don't know, but those guys obviously weren't of the mindset that they would stay and play for him as their position coach.

I never considered Grimes an OC candidate, at all. This is a huge step up for the guy. Y'all are taking a big chance. In that capacity he is unproven and certainly inexperienced.

I always thought that his O-Lines started the season slow and finished the year strong. I always thought after the first two or three games of the year that our O-Line was underachieving, and then when the season ended, it seemed like they were one of the better units on the team. This might be due to the fact that we play A&M at the end of the year too.

Ehh, everyone on the oline that played this year, we're recruited to LSU while Miles was still the head coach.

Just my 2 cents worth, but I think you guys are getting a very good coach. This past season, I think Grimes did a great job with the O-line after LSU lost some players they were counting on before the season began. Overall, I was very pleased with how our O-line played during his tenure here, and I think he recruits well. I'm not sure how he will do as an OC, but I wish him the best of luck.

Grimes has no OC experience and his OL's have been the weakest area of the team. (Due to his own coaching and recruiting; bringing in mostly OL's that have no business at LSU/SEC)

Haven't been difference makers that can gel together and consistently execute his scheme without breakdowns. Chronically bad in pass protection, but a little better in run blocking.

Don't know what BYU sees in this guy. Yall can have him. We upgraded immediately with Cregg from the Chargers. Hopefully, we can now get some OL's in here that can handle Bama's DL. That's what it all boils down to...........

By the way, I really like your head coach. After we played your team, I watched his TV show a few times on the BYU network. He is a class act and I hate to think that this hire will hurt your program and his career. I am not a fan of Coach Grimes. I wish that he would have found someone better.

He’s garbage and I’m glad he’s gone. This was his only decent season with the line.
