The Advocate: LSU may have a way to help players earn more money than the Tigers will be able to pay them

quote:

As LSU gets ready to pay players for the first time, athletics officials believe they found a way to exceed the cap on how much money they can spend by arranging outside name, image and likeness deals instead of using the department’s NIL collective.

LSU joined a program last year started by Playfly Sports, its longtime multimedia rights partner, designed to find NIL deals. The future of booster collectives is unclear with revenue sharing expected to begin this summer, and officials think the initiative, NILSU Max, will provide a legal way for athletes to earn more than the school can give them.

LSU plans to pay players the projected maximum of $20.5 million allowed in the first year of a settlement in three federal antitrust cases. The House settlement must be approved in April by U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilken.

Unfortunately you're probably right. Programs are going to look for additional revenue sources coming in rather than take a chunk out of what they're currently making.

Jersey sponsors are coming. You can also expect stadium naming rights deals too. Get Gordon Field at Get It Done Stadium has a nice ring to it doesn't it?

Nothing quite like a pre melt about a hypothetical situation.

It's only a matter of time. SW is already on the record saying "everything is on the table".

There is no way the NCAA can stop NIL unless the players agree to some sort of cap - which they won't agree to.

The NCAA can cap the schools money that is given to the players.

So, the only difference is that in the near future the schools can legally give money to the players. I guess you can say the schools couldn't help with NIL in the past, but we all know the schools basically arranged all NIL deals.

Not yet - just some saying that it has already helped with our portal class in the fall. It also isn't LSU dealing with crypto but LSU is part of a bigger marketing deal related to something with that.

This is very confusing. NIL is being replaced with profit sharing? Thought they’d run in tandom.

Seems like every position would have a value (WR3 gets paid x$) for profit sharing, but NIL seems to be more customized to the player.

The administrations thought they’d have both very recently.

They will. NIL will be on top of what they get in revenue sharing.

Going to be a strange couple of years until things get ironed out. Figured all of the players just get agents to pour through all of the rule changes. Crazy though, so strange negotiating against the school you’re playing for.
