The NIL intent was to give kids the ability to make some cash while in school and playing ball.
The NCAA did not benevolently "allow" NIL to exist. In fact, they vehemently fought against it until the USSC ruled UNANIMOUSLY that prohibiting college players from being compensated for others' use of their Name Image and Likeness was a violation of anti-trust law.

The end result is enticing players to come to your school by outbidding your competitor!
The schools aren't paying the players anything. In fact, the schools aren't allowed to facilitate such endorsement deals in any way. Essentially, you have wealthy boosters/fans that are using their businesses (or creating "charities") to "hire" players for endorsement deals. If Bob Gray of Bob Gray's Hyundai/Kia dealership feels $500k is a reasonable price to pay in exchange for the A&M starting QB to endorse his auto dealership, who's to say he's wrong? It's Bob's money.
However, we are in the infancy of this situation. The fun will begin when we start to see many 18-19 year old kids really frick over some wealthy people by taking the money and bolting without a "just" return on that investment.

Bob could be a loose cannon but he was a smart guy. He knew his football team was being coached by the next (Florida) A.D. imo
So, he won the first outright SEC title in 16-17 years and the 87 team under Archer went 10-1-1 and finished #5, which was our only top 5 finish between Dietzel last season and Saban in 2003

I had never heard that Brodhead wanted to fire Arnsparger before the '86 season.

Neither have I I read his book you’d think it would be in there
People have created this whole narrative about Spurrier and Arnsparger like it was some conspiracy to screw LSU

Yes. 1984 and 1986 Arnsparger lost to some very strong Nebraska teams.

Yep.
Not sure where this got started either. I suspect that when Spurrier achieved his success at UF and it was known that we could've hired him after '86, someone had to be blamed. And Arnsparger was an easy target since he hired him at UF 3 seasons removed.

Correct. Nebraska was a better program than we were in the mid-80s. Even had Bill poured his blood, sweat, and tears into preps, it wasn't likely to change the outcomes.
