are we better on defense? I keep hearing that we are, but the stats show different

The day before our USC game, I asked the question of what your reaction would be if our defense wasn't as improved as many of assumed. Led to 164 downvotes, which I'm assuming this post might reach the same number.
Let's break down some numbers for input.
LSU Defense 2024 3 games in 6.4 Yards a Play 10 TDs 380 Yards a Game 91st ranked Defense
LSU Defense 2023 3 games in 5.6 Yards a Play 9 TDs 338 Yards a Game
Now, Before you jump the gun, lets give this some context. In 2023 we played FSU, Grambling, and Miss State. Florida ended the year at 19th for offensive ranking and Miss State at 107. I cant find Grambling's FCS for 2023 but lets assume 80th or so.
2024? USC 16th ranked with only 2 games played. Nicholls FCS 111th South Carolina 115th
So, are we better? I keep hearing that we are, but the stats show different.

can't just go by stats man, this ain't Money Ball. You may get a DV for the title though.

Meh. Im not wasting time with another 'lsu defensive rankings' title.

I don't care one way or the other. Just telling you how it works.

How do you not go off of stats? We fired every defensive coach last year off of stats.

quote:You can cut and use specific stats all day long to fit a narrative, which you are doing. I'll just go with the eye test. This defense is playing little by little with more passion, going after the ball, aggressive and attacking offenses, and creating turnovers....

So I could give 2 fricks less about the stats you throw out, and I'll go with yes, they are improved.
Do the stats with TD's Allowed
Oh and frick you, Attention Whore

If you like stats do tackles for loss, sacks and third down stop percentages for the same time frame. Them compare that for the rest of the year.
If you don’t see we are a better defense no one her can help you.

Because it's football man. I see what the stats are and I see that there is nothing out there that screams that the D is better OR worse. What I see from 3 games in is a LSU team that has played sloppy D at times, had a chance to get teams off the field on 3rd and didn't and had a major letdown to an obviously inferior opponent in Nicholls. The Saturday game was on where SC played lights out, we missed on major plays that gave them points and didn't score when necessary.
Game of emotions unlike any other. That stat ain't measured.

We were 120th in 3rd down defense last year.
26th so far this year.
That’s the major difference to me and the ability to rush the passer/cause turnovers.

As others have said, this year we’re creating turnovers and getting stops on 3rd down to at least partially offset the chunk plays we give up.
Still nowhere close to championship level but they are absolutely improved over last year. I’m excited to see what Baker can do with a couple of top 5-10 recruiting classes.

You've forced 7 fumbles compared to 0 at this time last year. You have more sacks and TFL. Forced more turnovers, and you've made stops at critical moments, which we all know we didn't do in 2023.
The yardage totals are worse because we have traded in the busted coverages for busted run fits leading to 60 and 70 yd td runs. The run fits are an easier fix IMO.
Yes, we are better, and that will prove to be true over the course of the entire year.

I guess I'll bite and give you an actual response.
1) Yes, we all wish the defense would play better than it has.
2) The defense is still vastly improved from last year even if its still not where we'd want it to be.
The proof is there is you actually watch the game. The bad is that the defense is still missing run fits and allowing deep catches in one on one coverage. The good is that its not happening every play. Last year our defense gave up chunk play after chunk play and seemingly never got off the field on 3rd down. This years defense is getting off the field and giving the offense the ball back. Sure we gave up 2 huge runs vs SC but outside of those 2 bad run fits, we played pretty darn well against the run. Hell our offense threw a pick with like 6 minutes left in the game and the defense was able to 3 and out them and get the ball back for our offense to win the game. No shot that happens a year ago. Our defense also held a Lincoln Riley offense below 30 points which rarely happens. We are also forcing TOs or at least forcing TO worthy plays which sometimes haven't bounced our way. I haven't seen any real busted coverages this season either. When we get beat in the pass game, its because someone lost a 1 on 1 battle or because the offense found a hole in a zone.
Moral of the story is that yards aren't everything and while there is a ways to go, the defense is light years ahead of where they were a year ago.

let's circle back on the 5 week update. defense is about to get a couple opportunities to tune up the stats and gain some confidence.

Congrats on learning about this "statistic" for the first time and just reposting it over and over. Is our defense better? No.
Posted on 9/18/24 at 3:08 pm to Bert Macklin FBI
How can you say they are better? We are giving up even more yards than last year, to worse teams. Just because we have a few flashy plays, doesnt mean its better.
Posted on 9/18/24 at 3:11 pm to BadatBourre
We are definitely better. Much more tenacious and competitive. You need to be confident enough to use your eyes and make your own conclusions as opposed to going solely by stats....3 games into a season.
