Going by the pre-season AP poll, there would be 4 SEC teams in the playoff, with Missouri missing out by one spot.
If the AP preseason poll was used to fill a 12-team CFP bracket, it would look like this in the first round and quarterfinals:
— 12 seed Boise State at 5 seed Oregon, winner vs. 4 seed Utah at the Fiesta Bowl.
— 9 seed Notre Dame at 8 seed Ole Miss, winner vs. 1 seed Georgia at the Sugar Bowl.
— 11 seed Michigan at 6 seed Texas, winner vs. 3 seed Florida State at the Peach Bowl.
— 10 seed Penn St at 7 seed Alabama, winner vs. 2 seed Ohio State at the Rose Bowl.
EDIT
This format sets up really well for the #5 team to make the Semifinals. In this scenario, #5 Oregon does have to play an additional playoff game, but it would be a home game against Boise, a team they would've beaten in September (and if they had finished #5 and missed the Big 10 championship game, it would the same number of games regardless). They would then face the worst of the conference winners (in this case 12th ranked Utah) at a neutral site. They would then be going into the semis at a neutral site with a 2 game playoff win streak.

I don’t blame them one bit. After all they have a national fan base that hasn’t seen a championship since 1988.

We’ll just have to overachieve and win most of the close ones. We were gonna have to do that anyway. Our mission remains the same

Texas got handed the easiest SEC schedule to inaugurate them. UGA is the only L I see. They play Moo State, Vandy, trash can UF, Arky, Kentucky and 4&8

I know Ole Miss is looking good on paper but I’m still gonna have to see that to believe it.

This is why preseason polls are dumb. Also I don’t think the top 4 seeds automatically go to conference champs? #12 Utah is now #4?
ETA: I guess that is correct. Which seems like a mistake. Guess we’ll see how it plays out in January

No doubt the easiest conference schedule amongst the SEC teams expected to compete for a playoff spot. They do go to Ann Arbor out of conference, and if (as expected) A&M is sitting at 8-3 or 7-4 and out of playoff contention the final week of the regular season with Texas coming to College Station, that game will be Aggies chance to save their season.
It probably wont happen, but shite the bed at Michigan, lose to UGA, throw in a loss to OU, and Aggie wins their Super Bowl and we could see Texas going 8-4 because frick Texas.

Basically, a sixth place finish in the SEC. Are y’all happy with that?

Yeah, they do which is why finishing 5th in the playoff standings is probably better than or a wash finishing 3rd. You have the extra playoff game, but its at home against a G5 team and then you play the worst conference champ at a neutral site.
#3 has a longer layoff and their first playoff game against #6 with no homefield advantage.

Its a new world. A good season is making the playoffs, a bad season is missing the playoffs. So, if 6 SEC teams somehow make the playoffs and we are the 6th one, Im good.

I think Alabama is overrated because of a new coach. I think Missouri took a hit losing their defensive coordinator and is overrated. Ole Miss is overrated because Preppy Sunvisor coach is an idiot. We will finish higher in the SEC and make the 12 team playoff.

I feel like that’s where LSU always lands when the voters are just unsure.
They just put LSU in the middle of the pack to be safe so they’re not way wrong if we finish top 5 or unranked. Such a safe move

Someone tell me bout the Mizzou hype?

In 2003, we had to move from #14 to the top 2.
This year, we only need to move into the top 10 to all but guarantee a playoff spot.

I can’t wait to see Alabama slide down the polls. Will be glorious.

Utah being ahead is a joke, but I'm sure that ranking was based upon their schedule, and they are projected to win what is left of the big 12 I believe.
Rankings don't really matter though if you are in the SEC....you go 10-2 you will have a great chance to be in the playoff....now OM and MIZZ may have to go 11-1. Each only plays 3 ranked teams and their OOC is absolutely pathetic.

ND is gonna lose in crazy town on the first weekend.

quote:ranking, in general, are now irrelevant since we have the Playoff Selection Committee. These silly voter polls are a dinosaur.
I don’t care.
I wish they would get rid of preseason rankings
And even if rankings meant something, a pre-season ranking means absolutely zero, since no one has played a single snap of football yet.
Do what the Committee does -- wait until the season is about 75% done to issue the first set of rankings.
But ignore the silly voter polls.

#1 Georgia - Accurate
#2 Ohio State - Best of Big
#3 Oregon - Suspect
#4 Texas - Not likely
#5 Alabama - No Saban
#6 Ole Miss - Can Kiffin put it together?
#7 Notre Dame - Lol. No.
#8 Penn State - Permanent underachievers.
#9 Michigan - Lost too much?
#10 Florida State - Same as Mich.
#11 Mizzou - No Baker. No Care.
#12 Utah - Who? Pac - 3 winner is useless.
#13 LSU - Way too low! Championship!
#14 Clemson - Dabo can't do it alone.
#15 Tennessee - Break out year, every year?
#16 Oklahoma - Venables has to actually play SEC every year. Not just one and done in the playoffs. Too high.
#17 Oklahoma State - Under-rated.
#18 Kansas State - Why not?
#19 Miami - The U is not back.
#20 Texas A&M - Another year. Another overrated starting position.
#21 Arizona - Who's even the coach these days?
#22 Kansas - This is a joke right?
#23 Southern Cal - Must be signaling a loss to LSU.
#24 NC State - Under-rated.
#25 Iowa - Defense and a cloud of dust.
Is there a limit to how many Big 10 and SEC teams they will let into the playoffs?
Because outside of Florida State, none of the other teams stand much of a chance.
