A poor opinion submitted by lsutiger2.
You're making Metry look bad.

There also isn’t a single school in the the country who doesn’t give their coach a raise after a NC.
Not a one.

Woodward should have had that buyout come out of his paycheck. He's a freakin idiot for giving Orgeron that insane contract only to fire him a year or so later
That nice contract for Coach O seems like it was given to him to make him sign an NDA and not go scorched earth on LSU. Coach O probably had leverage on LSU with some insider info Woodward/LSU did not want divulged.

That is because they know other schools would love to take Saban, Dabo, Scott Drew, Jay Wright, etc from them. Giving a raise is the measure taken to prevent that. NO ONE was coming to take Orgeron.

Again, there isn’t a single school who doesn’t give their coach a raise for any coach.
No one was coming after Gene Chizik.
Also, telling your head coach that no one wants him isn’t a great way to get results.this is a purely hindsight based opinion.

Once the NCAA threatened the football program out of spite for Will Wade I think it made Woodward's decision pretty easy. As great as it was having WW you can't do anything to jeopardize LSU football and the revenue that it generates for the athletic department. The NCAA is like the crazy ex gf that holds grudges until death, so the NCAA was gonna find a way to get what they wanted and they did. It really sucks but I believe Woodward was backed into a corner and had to do whatever he could to minimize damages.

They aren't what most posters here think they are. You can hire or keep a coach that has one.

LSU (by potentially leading a secession of the top football schools), is more powerful than the NCAA. This has Emmert talking sonny in-law into rolling over on Wade to make him and the weak assed NCAA look good to the public written ALL over it. Bama, Auburn, and the other athletic departments with balls, laugh hysterically at the NCAA whenever they come sniffing around, and tell them to GTFO.

We admitted blame to the NCAA and thereby made ourselves a target
Posted on 3/16/22 at 10:27 am to lsutiger2
IN, appears there isn’t much evidence to any of this. This was a method for Woodward to hire a coach he wanted from the jump.

With NIL, the NCAA is a complete paper tiger, we gave them a reason to use their “power” against us

100% chance of show cause.
Pearl got 3 years for a pool party and lying about it.
Wade is getting a show cause.

And just what do you think this entails?
You do know that you can hire and/or keep a coach with a show cause, correct?

I didn’t say anyone wanted Ed no one wanted him but it’s also a bad look to not pay your NC winning coach. The problem was not putting some language in the contract to offset buyout.

I actually didn’t know that. Good info

No matter what LSU fans might think, there was not a single school in America who (1) was a strong enough program to compete for a NC, and (2) had the willingness to spend even what O was making in 2019, that was a threat to "steal" O from LSU. NONE! There was nothing contractually that said O had to get a salary increase if he won the NC. Woodward didn't have to give him another nickel and O would have still been the LSU HC in 2020. You tell me you're worth more than $____, then show me the other person that has an offer on the table confirming such. O could not do that because there wasn't anyone.
This is very short-sighted thinking. One, I’m not sure O’s contract didn’t have an automatic raise built into it in case of a National Championship—almost all contracts do, and since he took much less on his initial deal than probably every coach at a similar program, I’d think it would have had to have had some auto escalators.
But for the sake of this argument, I’ll just say they didn’t. He could have gone into the next season with the exact same contract he went into the ‘19 season with. How do you think that would have looked to potential future coaches? It was never about keeping another team from stealing him. At all. it was about showing other coaches that if you win championships as LSU, they will take care of you. Like with Wade, Woody knew he was gonna fire Orgeron the second he got the job. Which meant he had to make the job as attractive as possible to get the caliber guy he wanted next. Every single school in the country would have absolutely done the exact same thing.
O threw a kink in his plans by winning the NC, so Woodward had no choice but to give him a raise (whether he was contractually obligated to or not). Imagine trying to lure a Brian Kelly to come LSU when the last coach went 15-0, winning the SEC and National Championships with arguably the greatest college football team of all time that produced only the 2nd Heisman Trophy winner in school history and 1st in 60 years, and not only didn’t get a raise, but was shite-canned mid-season 20 months later.
What coach worth having would want to go work for an AD that treats their coaches like that? I’d say zero. Now, the buyout was ridiculous, but the raise had much less to do with O than it did showing the top tier coaches in all the sports that LSU is a 1st class place that will give their coaches whatever they need to be successful and will take care of them when they achieve that success. It was for Brian Kelly, Kim Mulkey, Jay Johnson, and whoever he winds up eventually hiring to replace Wade. You are thinking very short-sighted, Woodward was thinking long-term.

Yes yes. Thank you for wrecking our athletic program. That one sweet 16 appearance was totally worth it. And boy, did your bad boy attitude really show the NCAA. LSU is in debt to you forever WW.

There are some severe restrictions on your recruiting, and potential post-season and scholarship restrictions.
But, we will have that anyway by sucking.

I liked WW. I appreciate what he’s done for our program. I wish this wouldn’t have happened. But, given the fact that he participated in blackmail, on a university issued cellphone, I think SW had no choice. But I also believe it could have been handled better. It’s inexcusable that the players were not told in person at a team meeting. Personally, I will wait to see how this plays out before completely losing faith in Woodward. He walked into an absolute dumpster fire of an athletic program. We don’t know everything, and maybe we never will.
