How difficult would it be to build a cage out of the same aquarium type glass they have against the water in his habitat? I’m sure it would muffle outside noise fairly well and we’d be able to see him more clearly.

Is the issue more so the amount of visual stress or is it the noise? I feel like they could make this tradition work while still meeting “accredited tiger sanctuary” criteria if they really wanted to. If it’s not worth a shot with Mike VII due to his age, then at least give a shot when Mike VIII comes along?

University of Memphis had this for their tiger, so it can be done. I think it is something that needs to be started early in the tigers life, though.

Get an animatronic one. Those look very real if you spend some $$$

Wouldn't even need an animatronic, just a life-like stuffed doll.

Mike was basically comatose when he was in the trailer anyway.

I couldnt ever imagine why people care about this or want a tiger to go through these things.

The only thing I can think, is yall are the type who leaves your animals outside in 100 degree weather and freezing weather.

This is not a valid reason. I’m sure there is a way in the year 2024.

It's a fricking Tiger who's never left his habitat since he's been here.
Hence the suggestion about Mike the VIII.

As cool as it was, a live bengal tiger was not meant to be paraded around a stadium with 106,000 screaming fans. They are predatory and stalkers...I can't imagine how bad that fricks with his head to be surrounded by that many people.

Let it go

I will defer to the vets who take care of him. And if they think it's a bad idea, so be it.

At this point, it would be inhumane to try this with Mike VII. If the vets think they can work with Mike VIII using new tech to have him go to games and be safe, then sure, I would support that.

that criteria includes not removing him from his habitat for non-medical reasons.

Yep, purely a case of regulatory government overreach. LSU can’t acquire a Tiger from a legitimate source without that credential, but they also can’t use the Tiger for its traditional gameday role and maintain that credential. It seems that there are three options:

1. Lobby for a change to the credential requirements/a specifically carved out exemption

2. Allow the credentials to lapse and resort to acquiring future tigers from black market breeders.

3. Become a breeder yourself so you don’t have to worry about sourcing tigers.

I always thought those credentials were private / non-profit, not government granted?

Tigers are an endangered species. Thus, there’s loads of regulations governing how they can be acquired. However, there’s also a massive tiger black market. Whether the accreditation is technically public or private (I would guess an NGO that is all but an arm of the federal government in all but name), the “legit” sources all abide by it, and the black market doesn’t. The federal government loves to make examples of black market breeders when they can. A university would be an easy target.

Why can't some of you understand that this is NOT going to happen in any shape or form? The vets have made the decision and it's not going to change. At this point, we are fortunate to have a live tiger on campus in a great habitat. I'm grateful for that and don't want to lose it!

P.S. Yes, you are taking crazy pills. If not, you need to take them.

And a buffalo is? A longhorn? What about Eagles? Or that chicken that south Carolina rolls out? Or horses? What animals were actually "meant to be paraded around a stadium with 106k screaming fans"? Why aren't other mascots suffering mental anguish?

Why did Mikes I-V not have stress or mental anguish?

It may be for the accreditation but being that the Dean of the vet school opened up the possibility of Mike VIII doing it I feel like that's simply a rumor that someone put on here and people ran with it because it made sense to them.

None of the animals mentioned are fighting the instinct to stalk prey like a tiger? A tiger and a damn rooster are not the same
