Sides still talking

Chicago Cubs first-round pick Alex Lange had an issue come up with his physical on Monday, but the sides continue to talk about a deal that would presumably be less than the slot bonus value of $2,184,300 for the No. 30 pick, league sources tell FanRag Sports.

Interesting, would have thought such things would have been addressed before drafting a player

This reeks of Brady Aiken all over again. Except this time it would benefit my LSU fandom instead of pissing off my Astros fandom

Sounds like they're just trying to find some leverage to pay him less.

Alex Lange has had zero health issues his entire time at LSU and is arguably the most physically fit pitcher we've had here. The work he's put in from his freshman year to now has been extremely impressive. Sounds like the Cubs are trying to sandbag him to save some money for other players they've drafted. No way should Lange accept less than slot as a 1st round player drafted his junior year.

He pitched in CWS after the draft. As a pitcher he surely had another physical after the CWS for this very reason.

Pay $1.7M and let's move on.

Why should he give up 500,000 dollars? Hell no

He should tell the Cubs to go screw themselves and come back to LSU.

Would be risky of alex not to sign for less. Lets say he doesnt accept les than 2 mil, next year he comes back and doesnt even get 1 mil being a senior.

He should sign for 1.9 and call it a day. Im sure he will sign in less than 2 hours

Clubs don't have their own physicals on players that they are going to potentially draft.

the Cubs will lose that slot money regardless if he doesn't sign. Sure it's a risk for Alex, but he has more leverage here IMO. The Cubs do not want to risk not signing their 1st round draft pick and still losing the slot money for that pick.

If it were this simple, all MLB teams would offer under slot for their drafted players in the 1st round.

Screw the Cubs. Pay the guy his $2.2M. No one in that draft deserves it more than Alex.

Cubs would lose this year's slot allocation but can pick up a compensatory pick (and that slot money) next year. The compensatory pick is why teams have any leverage below slot. Without it there'd be no reason for anyone (even seniors) to sign below slot

What some have compared the situation to is recent draft prospect Kyle Funkhouser, who was drafted No. 35 overall by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2015. While Funkhouser didn’t fail a physical with the Dodgers, he chose to go back to Louisville for his senior season and wound up being drafted in the fourth round by the Detroit Tigers, signing for a $750,000 bonus, much less than what he would have received in 2015 had he chosen to sign with the Dodgers.

Mark Appel was drafted in top 10, couldn't reach a deal with Pittsburgh

Came back as a senior and was the No. 1 pick

IIRC they do not get the same slot money back. they get whatever slot money is assigned to the supplemental pick, which is less than what the slot is for the 1st round pick.

Like I said, sure there is leverage on both sides, but if teams had all the leverage in these types of situation, 1st round picks for college players with one year of eligibility left would never get slot value, and that just isn't the case.
