Crazy to think that being surly with the media (a collective organization worth loathing) would keep him from getting his just proper. To my knowledge he was never tied to PED use, but others may correct me on that. Corked bat didn't do him any favors either. However, if you ain't cheatin' you ain't tryin' in MLB

No shite. How many pitchers are in the HOF who used vaseline and sandpaper. I think it's just an excuse because they just didn't like him.

media has a lot of clout, a long memory, and can hold a grudge with the best of them

JB is the only Skip player who has never returned to LSU for team reunions. Skip kicked him, his best player, off the team after the team earning the right to go to Omaha. That shows us how "bad" he was. I can't speak as to his dad, but one of my best friends back then played with JB in Shreveport & he always told me JB's mother was a huge racist ; he also said that Terry was the polar opposite of JB, a good guy. Off the field, perhaps not that well known as it was very much under the radar, JB was dating a white girl from Denham Springs, back then KKK country, & she showed up at every game wearing his letter jacket. Again, consider the times back then.

I don’t think he has spoke since the early 00s

and consider that Belle accused Skip, LSU, the baseball team, and anyone else he could think of of being racist towards him

He had 50 homers and 50 doubles, nobody else has achieved that.
And to think that he accomplished this feat in a strike-shortened season.

He was cut from LSU.
He has recently done a couple things but he’s more of a recluse. That’s actually good for him.

I know he left on not so good terms, but surprised he does not gets interviewed about his time here. He was a very dynamic player
He was a great player college and MLB. If you knew much about or followed LSU baseball back then you wouldn't be surprised that he never came back or talks about his time here.

That 50/50 year as done in a 144 game shortened season. My freshman year was the first championship, so I’ve seen them all, and he’s the best to ever put on the purple and gold. He should’ve won one if not 2 mlb mvp’s but his attitude cost him. If he doesn’t get injured, he hit over 500 homers and I is in the hall of fame. Honestly of he wasn’t an arse, his 12 year injury shortened career gets him him the hall. Dude could rake

I know a bit about your dad and I know your uncle. I went to school with the Belle brothers. They were good guys and always kind to me. Joey was absolutely a dick when he was competing, no matter what game or sporting event. Your dad told the truth. I saw Joey a few years back, he was friendly to me as always. Definitely I feel that he is misunderstood but also I feel that he has to own his mistakes, even though most of us do not get the publicity he gets for his.

At some point, and strictly playing armchair psychologist here, my read is that he probably started to battle some mental health issues.
I always thought the dude was on the spectrum. And like Rainman had his mathematics genius, Joey's/Albert's genius was in baseball and hitting baseballs.
I do know that the guy (and his brother Terrence) were both pretty damn smart. They were accounting majors at LSU and I believe Joey/Albert got his accounting degree from Case Western Reserve after he left LSU and went to the Indians.

Thank you everyone for your replies. Really learned a lot from this, the stories are amazing

Growing up in BR, I always heard stories about Joey/Albert Belle and his menace, but also his kindness was well regarded by those in the program. I think many people have played armchair psychologist by diagnosing him as being bi-polar. I’m not a shrink but bi-polar seems a good description. He definitely had the Jekyll and Hyde thing going for him.
When he was off the field, staff, coaches, and other people around the team knew Joey. He was the Eagle Scout, the nice guy who played with the coaches’ kids in the dugout and the batting cages before practice. He was very, very smart. Terry was probably more academically gifted, but Joey was a bit more carefree. Got his work done, yet had some fun.
However, Albert came out in between the white lines. There was a noticeable change that Skip and the coaches fought to control for the years he was there. His tenacity, anger, pride, and drive created a fearsome combination that was perfectionistic in a deadly way. Albert was known for breaking things in the dugout and locker room. He could be a bully during practices and games. He was not a team player, wouldn’t bunt at practice, and would take extra BP when it wasn’t his turn. Albert played hard, yet when he gave up, he absolutely gave up. He was negative towards his coaches and fellow players. He was a shooting star of talent that couldn’t be contained or controlled. Skip met with Joey many times and cussed Albert up and down but trust me, the stories I’ve heard said Albert did his fair shares of cussing too. Skip couldn’t take it anymore and Albert had to go.
I don’t remember many specific stories anymore. Those are the generalizations from multiple coaches and players whose kids I grew up with.

Excellent video. Thanks for sharing. He was a beast at the plate.

I was a student back then. I remember seeing Terry in the old Pentagon cafeteria and talked to him a couple of times. I can't say I knew him, but his personality was definitely polar opposite of Joey. I remember walking past Joey one day near Tiger stadium. I could not believe how built he was for a baseball player. Just a physical specimen.
