ENGSTER: Albert Belle, man of mystery and mastery

There is little question about the best baseball player to grace the diamond at LSU. He arrived at Alex Box Stadium 30 years ago from Huntington High School in Shreveport where he was sixth in his class academically. Outfielder Joey Belle enrolled as an unassuming Eagle Scout and a member of the National Honor Society. Three decades later, he is one of the most controversial professional athletes on record.

It is my opinion that this is where Joey/Albert is lacking.

Not to mention he didn't graduate... At least I'm assuming he didn't graduate in 3 years...

I'm a Cleveland Indians fan so I remember watching Belle growing up and he was one of my favorites, but he doesn't qualify for LSU hall of fame.

Seriously man. Whatever your thoughts are on Belle, its pretty cut and dry he's the best player we've ever had.

Didn't Belle have 50 HR and 120 RBI one year in mlb?

Are you talking about best former lsu player in mlb? I would say Albert would be up there. Albert was a great player n I mean great but Ben was in a class by himself. Unfortunately he was damaged goods by the time he got to pro baseball. There was no question who the number 1 player in the country was in that era.

I went to Huntington with Joey. He's a good guy. He just had a temper. Many people don't know this but he was also a great pitcher and could have started at strong safety for the Tigers as a freshman.

I don't think it bothers Belle that he is not in hall of fame
I don't think he ever came back to finish degree and not to mention he was kicked off the team so didn't necessarily leave in good standing.

If he did get his degree or obtain a degree from somewhere else than maybe we can revisit the banishment kind of like Pete Rose.

Joey Belle was an amazing talent.

Definitely one of the best LSU baseball players of all-time.

Also, LSU players never really do anything big once they make it to the majors. I'd say he's the best LSU pro ballplayer too.

Career:

1726 H, 381 HR, 1239 RBI, .295 AVG

The only other LSU players I can think of who come close are Al Dark and Joe Adcock.

Always understood he hated lsu and bertman for his suspensions in 80s. I dont recall any mentions of him ever coming back here for reunions or special lsu events

Yeah, he actually had 125+ RBIs in 4 different seasons in the 90s. He was a top 5 player in the MLB throughout the 90s.
