Thoughts?
There were only really two possible opponents. Arkansas or aTm.
Texas-Oklahoma is a given
Auburn-Alabama is a given
Florida-Georgia is a given
Ole Miss-Miss State is a given
Vandy-Tenn-USCe-UK will produce two of the matchups If I had to guess Vandy-Tenn & USCe-Kentucky will be the actual matchups there.
So that is LSU-aTm-Mizzou-Arky left It won't be LSU -Mizzou. Arky-Mizzou is the current permanent cross-divisional rival for Arky and probably makes the most sense so that leaves LSU-aTm as much as many of us may hate it.

We will NOT be guaranteed to play Bama
*this is Saban's doing

frick put Arky and A&M together so they can butt frick each other in Jerry World every season. Id literally take anyone over A&M and Missouri

I really hope that's just a 1 or 2 year stopgap plan until they figure out the more permanent 9 game schedule down the road, or ESPN pays more money for the extra games or whatever the holdup on that is.
Side note, it's bullshite how the Tenn/Bama game was what held up scheduling reform in the past, now suddenly Tennessee finally wins one and has a good season and it's now an expendable rivalry game.

Also, the only decision that has been made regarding number of games is for 2024. Sankey is still pushing for 9 games, and OU and Texas will likely vote for 9 when they join. I would also bet that you find Bama on LSU's schedule for 2024.
It may be that with one more year of data, the "haves and have nots" calculus will change, and they will rework the 3 permanent rivals to Lord Saban's satisfaction, turning Bama from an 8 to a 9 supporter.

A 1 year "permanent" opponent?

I'm 100% certain this is the reason that this setup is only for 1 year.

This conference has fricked itself so hard

Not getting OM as long as they play the Egg Bowl

Yeah, given what you said I was worried they would stick A&M with ARKY as an old SWAC rivalry leaving us with a weird matchup.
I don’t like A&M, but it’s better than Kentucky, MIZZOU, or Vandy.
The A&M matchup is a result of the other schools having a true in state (or historical) rival. We weren’t getting Ole Miss over State.

it’s obvious it’s going to be OU - Texas.
I think this is the actual reason. Ole Miss already has MSST, TX has OK, Bama has either TN or Auburn. Florida has Georgia. So it was either A&M or Arky.

We all knew this would happen bc everyone else already has a natural rival except Arkansas, Missouri, and TAMU (LSU has several “rivals”).
LSU’s fan base in the Houston metro area is enormous so TAMU was the obvious pick.

quote:
“We have been engaged in planning for the entry of Oklahoma and Texas into the SEC since the summer of 2021, but the change of the membership date from 2025 to 2024 creates scheduling complexities that can better be managed with a one-year schedule,” said SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey.
“Creating a one-year schedule will provide a longer on-ramp to manage football scheduling around existing non-conference commitments of our members,” Sankey said. “It will also provide additional time to understand the impact of an expanded College Football Playoff and engage with our media partners as we determine the appropriate long-term plan for SEC football scheduling.
“During this time of change, our fans will continue to enjoy traditional rivalries and begin to see new matchups presented by the addition of two historically successful football programs to the SEC,” Sankey said.
Each schools opponents for the 2024 season will be announced on Wednesday, June 14 on a special primetime show on the SEC Network. Dates for those games will be announced at a later date.

Would rather have Alabama or Auburn or Florida. Probably the three most anticipated games each year. Ole Miss is boring. Yeah we hate them but the game is garbage. A&M is forced. The three I named our better games.

How about we just go back to the way college football was before 2012?
Posted on 6/1/23 at 6:06 pm to SportsGuyNOLA
I don't think Saban really wants to play us every year
