A good, modern offense doesn't require a QB to "read the entire field"

I am going to make a longer and more detailed thread about this tomorrow, but many on this board see the game with dinosaur lenses on. Modern offenses scheme guys open and create scoring opportunities. They do the heavy lifting and QBs (this applies to the NFL, too, nowadays) only have to operate that offense.

Trent Dilfer was on Russillo this week and he explained it incredibly well (I'll go into detail on my main thread tomorrow). The offensive scheme/calls should account for about 35-55% of production, pretty much automatically.

Even NFL QBs don't "read the entire field" or "go through progressions". It's just not the way modern offenses work. You have 1-2 reads and then it's a scramble drill. The burden is on the offense to be creative and efficient.

Our problem is that the Kelly/Denbrock offense is more antiquated.

Summary: JD is playing well in a bad, uncreative offense. His issues stem from scheme/system, but even within the bad scheme, he's developing.

Been making this argument since the conservative, early Miles era.

I complained almost all through the Miles era. Not interested in doing that again. Hopefully Denbrock isn't as bad as you claim.

Their high school coach probably taught them a different way.

Thanks for letting us all know. I'll be sure and block off part of my Sunday to read and absorb what I'm sure will be an awesome analysis. I fully expect it to be high quality, like your prediction that Terrence Tolliver would be a first round draft choice.

I 100% agree with you.

But, does a modern offense require a quarter back to throw to players who aren’t uncovered and to throw to receivers in stride?

When you run long, slow developing, pass routes, the QB must see the entire field.

I agree with your main point about how modern offenses are designed. Even with that said, Daniels sometimes fails to see open receivers that simply have to be in his pre snap read. Attending the Miss State game in person made this really clear. For example, I saw him look dead at an outside WR slant, inside guy out route combo, I which both receivers broke wide open. JD double clutched then ran. I do not mean to suggest he’s a bad player— to the contrary, I think he is good player—but at least some of the issue with “seeing the field” appears to be on him.

I'm not disagreeing

He shouldn't have to "see the field" like that. This offense is making him do it because it's a dino offense.

I'll put it this way. We get Lincoln Riley instead of Kelly and then get JD to transfer. Does anyone think JD is performing like this in a Riley offense? No way.

You remember his draft predictions from 12 years ago?

100%

Riley requires throws in anticipation of getting open and accurate throws in stride.
