A Detailed Look at LSU with and without Xavier Pinson

Let's look at the numbers to back up my statement that Xavier Pinson is the most important player on the team.
Xavier Pinson was averaging 27.9 minutes, 10.9 points, 4.1 assists, 1.8 steals with a 42.2 FG% and 81.4 FT%. (1st 3 SEC Games before injury: 11.0 Pts, 4.7 Ast, 3.7 Reb, 1.7 Stl)
Xavier Pinson before injury: 27.9 Mins, 10.9 Pts, 4.1 Ast, 1.8 Stls, 42.2 FG%, 81.4 FT%
Anyone who has played organized basketball at high school or above, or has coached it, understands that no team can win without a floor general. For most teams, it is the Point Guard because he runs the offense and controls the pace of the game. For LSU, Pinson was that guy. Take a look at how this team played with him vs. when he was out.
*I am not going to include the two games he played recently because he was still fighting the injury and played 7 mins against TCU and 16 against Ole Miss.
The first image shows how LSU's offense performed with Pinson and then without. The differences that are green represent a reduction in that category. Without Pinson, we score 13.9 less points on offense, shoot 6.6 less Field Goals, etc...
For the Opponent sheet, this shows how our opponents numbers looked with or without Pinson. Once again, you can see how many things have changed on defense too including giving up nearly 12 points more per game without him.
I hope this helps you see the importance of having him in the lineup and get a better understanding of how things can change quickly when your team loses their floor general. Announcers keep calling our offense chaotic and that is the best description.

And we saw what Auburn looked like without their starting PG this weekend.

That's the thing. The majority of the fan base didn't.
They see LSU sports in a bubble and can't accept any sort of context or any other reason for struggle besides "we're bad. fire the coach."

Great post…thanks for putting together.
Knew he was important. Didn’t realize he was that important.
I just don’t know if he can get back to the player he was this year.

My guess is the usual morons that want to bash Wade at all cost will avoid this thread.
It’s very clear with these numbers, that we were a top 15 team with him and a very average team without him.
If he can get back to 85-90% by this weekend, still think this team is capable of making the second weekend.
With the exception of the 1st half Saturday, I’ve never felt like the team didn’t play hard. Effort was there, on floor leadership was not.

The supporting cast at Auburn has 2 five stars and another very talented guard.
LSU simply isn’t that talented. We don’t have a top 3 NBA pick, a very seasoned 2 guard, and a 2nd year true center to pick up the slack when a PG goes out.
People mistakenly believe that because of the hot start that we are extremely talented this year.
The reality is without Miller this is Wade’s least talented team since year 1. The fact that we started the way we did, including wins over two top 15 teams, was probably his best coaching job since he’s been here.
ETA. but most of the drive by morons who watch one game a week (of any basketball) and still ask how we are going to finish in the West, don’t get these things.

Georgia is worst than both of those teams by a wide margin. Come of Lester you are better than that

Your omitting the part of all the non conference layups for these stats, see Reid stats. agreed we need that dude back though

Looking at your posts you seem complicit in propping this team up

Being negative towards LSU, while being completely inarticulate in the process. Yep, sounds right.

Shut up negative Nancy.

Point guards are always very important but on a defensive oriented team that value is compounded exponentially.

Reality isn’t negative. It’s reality

I think it's him missing but it's also everyone else having to move up a spot or play out of position.

It’s not that Pinson is a superstar player, it’s a combination of what he provides production wise and his position at point. The biggest issue is that our team is designed to push the ball and play as fast as we can. Without Pinson we’re forced to play a half court style offense and Gaines can’t be as aggressiveness on D or maintain the energy he brings when he comes off the bench. The second problem is Pinson is a stabilizer and good decision maker which helps win close games. Every time the game tightens we start turning it over, taking bad shots and making stupid decisions. Pinson helps a lot with that too.
