6 out of 9 NFL DC hires were position coaches

We now have young coordinators on both sides of the ball. As NFL head coaches get younger so does coordinators. Taking a chance on a young position coach seems to be trending up vs. retreads. Let’s see what happens.

A year ago, Ohio State hired a DC who was previously a CB coach for 2 years with the Titans. They played in the national championship his first year calling a defense.

Bills secondary coach 2016 -> Bills DC Frazier hired 2017
Dolphins secondary coach 2019 -> Dolphins DC Boyer hired 2020
Giants defensive backs coach 2018 -> Bengals DC Anamuro hired 2019
49ers defensive backs coach 2019 -> Browns DC Woods hired 2020
Bears defensive backs coach 2018 -> Broncos DC Donatell hired 2019
Broncos defensive backs coach 2020 -> Chargers DC Hill hired 2021
Colts defensive backs coach 2020 -> Eagles DC Gannon hired 2021
Bears Safeties coach 2020 -> Bears DC Desai 2021
Saints defensive backs coach 2020 -> Lions DC hired 2021
Vikings defensive backs coach 2020 -> LSU DC Jones hired 2021
9 NFL DCs were DBs/safety coaches the year prior to being hired.
This is not a crazy concept to hired a DB coach to be your DC.

How many schools do you think the fans like their defensive coordinator?
It’s very few.
With modern offenses, they all look bad.
In the SEC this past year I would say maybe 5 out of 14 would pass a fan poll.

I love that we have young upward trending coordinators on both sides of the ball. So glad we didn't hire some old retreads. Should be good for recruiting as well.
