Offenses were much easier to defend then

The offenses of today would give that team some fits

Oh really? Are you suggesting that we couldn't just take a defense from 1910 and plop them into an SEC game in 2019 and expect them to do well?

When we compare defenses, players or teams across decades we are comparing them relative to their competition, not compared to the competition 100 years later.

I’m biased..but the ‘82 defense my freshman year was still the best I’ve seen.

That was my second year. It WAS a great defense, but had almost zero depth.

The defensive line had Dardar at nose, and Marshall and Elko at tackles. That's as good a starting group as LSU has ever put on the field. But after that they had one guy - Greg Bowser - an undersized scrappy nose guard.

Dubroc, Williams, Melancon, and Richardson were as good a group of linebackers as I've ever seen at LSU until the last couple of years. No depth, but who needs it at linebacker.

The defensive backfield is probably the third or fourth best in LSU history. Hobley and Dale are the best safety combo we've ever had. Britt and Daniels were long time starters in the pros at corner.

The front 11 is probably the best we've ever had. Every one of them was a solid NFL prospect, many had long NFL careers as starters, and Daniel and Marshall were NFL All Stars. They wore down against great competition, however, and that's what stops it form being as good as 2011.

I saw where 3 DB's made a Watch List and Delpit made another List to go along with the 4 LB's that made a Watch List. Looks like 7 Players out of 11 are on some kind of Watch List and some are Preseason All Americans. Could be the most talent I have seen on Defense going back to the 50's for me. Aranda probably cannot believe his eyes and he is probably like Uncle Jed when he discovered Oil!!!

I been said it. The only question is who will step up opposite of Chaisson. If we get some solid production over there... BEST LSU D ever is absolutely in the picture.

03 and 11 will be tough to top.

03 had talent plus nick Saban and muschamp at the head of it.

11 raw talent was more and a worse dc than Saban/champ

The D line needs to be better to make it elite. I think no dl has caused some of the games where Aranda has been run out of the stadium.

The 2011 defense beat up eventual Pac12 champ/Rose Bowl champ, Big East/Orange Bowl champs and eventual national champs all away from Baton Rouge.

The most impressive outing for that defense was actually 1/9/12. They went 3 1/2 quarters without giving up a TD. At least two of the field goals were given up on drives that started in FG position. They did all this with an offense going 3 and out all game long. Not only does that put the defense on the field the whole time, but it kills any hope of victory and is demoralizing. Also, in the rematch they faced a much better QB than the wide-eyed freshman he was two months earlier. God that offense was horrible!

I hate to admit this ...but the 2011 Alabama defense was better ( the guys we lost to )

Definitely not. They looked better against LSU because they had an offense helping them out. That Bama defense was not nearly as versatile as LSU's. LSU shutdown the best of several different types of offense - spread, power, and RPO.

Saying we lost because their defense was better means our offenses were equal

If you ignore field position TOO and the fact that they kicked 5 field goals.

Yeah.

Les’ demise ultimately started with the 9-6 victory. He didn’t think he needed to adjust his game plan for 1/9/12 and Saban brought in Gregg Williams to specifically show him how to stop the option. He could beat up lesser teams playing bully ball, but he had no answer against a team that could match pound for pound.

That conversation starts with 1958 and works backwards
Which other D had its own song that band still plays 60 years later ?

2011 team had a better defense. Almost every player on that defense got drafted. Defensive line had 3 1st rounders and a 2nd rounder. Sam wasn't a 1st on the line but he was going 1st until he screwed up before the draft. Lavar Edwards even as a reserve got drafted like in the 3rd. Guys like Brooks at DB were drafted and he was a reserve. That team was super loaded. The only weakness on the entire defense was the 2 LB spots that Saban exploited in the NC game.

Brockers in the middle could not be moved. Dude was an anchor. Logan was the most underrated player on that defense. Mingo/Sam came off the edges. All 1st round talents but Logan slipped to the second.

Not even close, we still don't have the dline we are used to, we have to replace a huge hole at MLB and losing one of our top db. Let's see how the younger guys do first

Going into 2011 we had to replace PP7, Nevis, and Kelvin Sheppard.

Not saying we will be the greatest D ever, just saying that the D we currently consider the best (at least top 3) replaced stars equal to Devin White.

I woukd Say that PP7 was the only starter we lost equal to White

Shepard and Nevis were great but not Devin White level players.

BUT a big similarity is getting Mingo/Chaisson back.

2003, 2007, and 2011 had way better, deeper Dlines! This Dline will be good but nowhere near being dominant.

We so stacked it’s unbelievable. I’ll just say names like Patrick Queen..Todd Harris...Jacoby Stevenson. From what I seen on the field from them at times I expect huge strides. That’s 3 players we don’t even get to talk about because we so stacked.

The 1969 defense held opponents to 39 yards rushing per game..jus sayin..

But I think 2011 was the best.

Players from the 2011 team are currently on NFL rosters. We aren't talking about several decades Gap in athletic ability. I was referring to the advances in offensive coaching you moron.

Just way to early to tell on something like that. Could it be? Sure, with the amount of talent LSU has returning with some of the new guy's really stepping up it they can be right up there. I do expect this defense to be very good, and if they play at a level of the 03,07,or 11 defenses or close to those we will have a very special year.
