Seeing a lot of doom and gloom/disbelief on this board. Defense is much improved and vegas knows it:

2019 spread: Alabama -6

2023 spread: Alabama -3

Just something to think about, I am not doing the research, but my guess is this will be the closest LSU/Bama spread in 10 years or so.

Heh?

We gave up 39 points and 527 yards to Missouri and then played spectacularly shitty offenses in Auburn and Army. We've since lost a starting defensive lineman and starting corner.

What are you basing this improvement on?

I say much improved, they improved from the worst defense of all time to like a middle of the road defense. With this offense it is enough to beat 99% of teams, including Bama this year in particular.

Tackling, not as many big plays (Auburn and Army drive a lot of that), better secondary play, better line play. Again, I am saying better than it was, not that the D is good. It's college football you can win with this team.

That is not why Vegas has the game close. It has absolutely nothing to do with our defense and everything to do with our offense.

Or you could say they went from playing against competent offenses to playing against 2 of the worst offenses in college football…

Like 2019, we have the BEST player on the field Saturday night. No other way to say it, and there is no argument.
JD will make plays, with his arm and his feet, all game. I expect Bama's DEF to give him some issues, but over 4 quarters (and then some if needed) he'll get the ball out and downfield.
We needed JB to do the same in 2019, and he sure did.
Let's get it done.

I said in another thread that my guess is 2010 was the last time LSU were favored or smaller underdogs but I’m not sure they were even then

They've improved from an F-minus to a solid-D.

Champions aren't graded on a bell curve.

In fairness to this year’s team, the JB 2019 team would have likely lost 3-5 games with this defense.

If they were "middle of the road", I would have little doubt that LSU wins tomorrow. The front seven has been a massive disappointment particularly Maason Smith. He plays like a 2 star recruit trying to find his way.

I’m not sure we are even middle of the road.

We’ve gone from historically awful to very bad. And that’s before losing Wingo and Zy.

Just hope the guys playing play above their heads and do just enough to win

True, but one thing to remember is LSU started the season without a defensive line coach. I wish Coach Pete had been called back to duty a couple of weeks earlier. IMO Coach Pete can be a difference maker tomorrow night.

We have improved from putrid to below average so there has been some improvement.

And you left off all those defensive players that still got crushed. Prior to playing LSU, Bama was giving up 16.3 PPG (don’t listen to that other freaking moron that only looked at end of season stats). Burrow hung 33 by halftime.
