There's no need to understate how legendary that defense was.

The secondary was legendary.

The LBs were not. Minter was awesome, but from an overall LB group, that was an average year for LSU.

The DL was really good, but they weren't legendary status like '03

2019 offense would put 31 on them.
IDK man Joe would have to have a perfect day. The best D-line we faced in 2019 (Auburn) gave our offense the most fits.

We had an elite D-line and an elite secondary in 2011. We no doubt had more talent than any defense we faced in 2019. I think that defense had the personnel to hold 2019 offense to less than 30 no doubt.

Could run nickel and dime packages with any variation of these players.

Mingo
Montgomery
Adams
Brockers
Logan
Downs

Minter
Baker

Mathieu
Claiborne
Brooks
Simon
Reid
Taylor
Loston

That roster had the speed/power across the board to drop 6 or even 7 in coverage if necessary.

Remember rules were different in 2011. If 2019 offense played in 2011, I'd give 2011 more of an edge and vice versa.

2019 Offense. It was just so fricking overpowered.

Chase and JJ and Joe on the same team is disxusting.

the scheme was perfect for them.

I would rather an elite Offense vs an elite defense

I would rather a good defense vs a good offense.

Look what auburns 19defense did to the 19 offense.

Now ask what would LSUs 11 defense do?

I think you're right that it's close. 2011 offense was probably worse than 2019 defense, so 2011 defense had a tougher hill to climb than 2019 offense

ETA: let's call it 2011 defense + special teams. our special teams were fricking insane with Tyrann scoring 3-4 times and Brad Wing had one of the best punter seasons I can remember.

Ran a simulation of this game on NCAAGameSim.com.

Drive Result:
- Joe Burrow to Jamarr Chase for 19 yard TD (7-0 2019)
- Spencer Ware 5 yard rushing TD (7-7)
- Cade York 26 yard FG (10-7 2019)
- Jarret Lee interception
- Joe Burrow to Justin Jefferson for 7 yard TD (17-7 2019)
- Brad Wing 66 yard punt
- ZVR 47 yard punt
- Brad Wing 61 yard punt
- ZVR 43 yard punt
- Michael Ford 7 rushing TD (17-14 2019)
- ZVR 46 yard punt
- Brad Wing 63 yard punt
- Cade York 21 yard FG (20-14 2019)
- Jordan Jefferson 24 yard rushing TD (21-20 2011)
- Joe Burrow to Justin Jefferson for 39 yard TD (27-21 2019)
- Drew Alleman 35 yard FG (27-24 2019)
- ZVR 41 yard punt
- Drew Alleman 39 yard FG (27-27)
- Joe Burrow to Jamarr Chase for 82 yard TD (34-27 2019)
- Time expires with 2011 running the football... [this checks out]

Final: 2019 34-27 2011

Who knows how that game would have played out, but this was a fun little expirement

2011 defense all the way.

2019 was overrated. It allowed 38 points to a bad Texas and also 38 points to a bad Vanderbilt team.

03 defense was better
03 defense had a better front but 11 defense had maybe the best defensive backfield in college football history. Still, 11 defense had Montgomery and Mingo, who were both superstars in their own right at the college level, Logan and Brockers in the middle, and tackling machines in Minter and Baker at the next level.

03 defense was #1 nationally allowing 11 ppg, playing a pretty average schedule, whereas 11 defense was #2 nationally allowing 11.3 ppg playing OOC offensive juggernauts in Oregon and WVU.

The 03 defense had 21 picks to 11's 18, but 11 forced 16 (recovered) fumbles compared to 03s 2. 11 defense had too many impact players and playmakers to say any other defense in school history was as good. I mean you saw it even when Mathieu was out. Ron Brooks would take games over

The real question is has there ever, in CFB history, been a better special teams unit than LSU's 11 special teams unit. 1 KR TD, 2 PR TD, #2 nationally in yards per PR, multiple forced turnovers on punt, 98% on XP and 89% on FG, the best punter in the country with a pre national title game average of something like 6 inches per punt return, the peak of Les Miles' directional kick offs and coverage, It was insane.

no issue with you taking 2011 defense because I think it would be a great matchup... but that 2019 defense had several NFL talents, especially in the backfield

defenders 2024 stats in the NFL
Patrick Queen: 129 tkls, 65 solo tkls, 1 sack, 9.5 tfls, 2 ff
K'Lavon Chiasson: 32 tkls, 19 solo tkls, 5 sacks, 7 tfls, 1ff
Grant Delpit: 111 tkls, 68 solo tkls, 1 sack, 11.5 tfls
Cordale Flott: 53 tkls, 36 solo tkls, 3.5 tfls, 1 int
Kristian Fulton: 51 tkls, 39 solo tkls, 3 tfls, 1 int
Derek Stingley Jr: 54 tkls, 37 solo tkls, 5 tfls, 5 ints

not to mention, Jacoby Stephens and Jacob Phillips aren't listed here but were the first and second leading tacklers on that team. The DL wasn't amazing but the LB group held up just fine between Phillips, Queen, Clark, and Divinity

Texas game you had Todd Harris starting (resulted directly in two touchdowns) and Fulton misplaying what should have been an interception (resulted in one touchdown).

The Vanderbilt myth has been debunked a million times over. They scored two defensive touchdowns. They also had an NFL running back and all conference receiver, the only people who really did any damage all day.

Well Webster was the best cover guy out of both groups and Landry was the best safety by far plus you had Daniels who still holds the SEC record for pass breakups in a season and Gay who was an excellent nickel corner so I’d give the secondary a push and the LBs a push but the front from 03 was better. Spears and Hill were better players, Lavalais and Williams were better as well and all of them were 295lbs or more. You couldn’t run on that group at all and collectively they outpace 2011 in sacks 24 to 22.

Ask Nick Saban which one was better.

Yes, but Claiborne was a superstar and Thorpe award winner. Simon was long and elite on the outside when Mathieu shifted inside.

Landry was the best safety by far
True freshman Laron Landry was not "by far" better than Sophomore Eric Reid. They were equal, maybe giving Landry a slight edge. Daniels was better than Simon but Mathieu pushes the 11 secondary over the edge. LB is a push and 03 front is better.

2011 only gave up 9 more ypg offensively, despite their own offense being more inefficient. The numbers are almost identical, so I'm giving the edge to 11 simply because they played a tougher schedule and offenses had opened up slightly more. That and Mathieu.
